Yes, rectal temperature was standard during my teen years at home.
I did not take it really often though since I was rarely sick.
When I had a bad cold - bad enough to stay in bed let's say - rectal thermometer was the rule.
It had been the rule when I was a very young child - up to 5 years I'd say - and after that my parents switched to oral because I made a huge fuss when they had to take my temp.
For some reasons, the oral thermometer broke several years after my parents bought it (it was an electronic one, with a battery), so we switched back to the old rectal thermometer ( the glass rod) but since I was older and rarely sick, temperature taking wasn't a big deal any longer.
I remember my dad bringing me the rectal thermometer in my room though, when I was a teenager. I didn't like it but was much more relaxed about it, especially because I was old enough to insert it by myself, under the bed sheet. My father trusted me enough to leave me privacy so he usually left the room while I did the dirty job!
Back in the 90's, it was still the rule for most of teens in my age, judging from what I've heard from other classmates joking about it when they came back to school after a cold: "gosh, I got the thermometer up the ass" or, for those who were sent back home from school because they were sick, the others ironically laughing to him "Lucky you, you'll get the thermometer in your ass, ahah", etc, because it was considered as a normal but still humiliating procedure.
