In my childhood it depends who took my temperature.
My dad sometimes twisted the thermometer to see if it has finished, sometimes pulled it out and looked at it and reinserted it into me.
My mom was very careful, pushed it into my bum and didn't touch it until time was over.
My pediatrician was more rude. His thermometer had a longer tip than ours at home, and I remember always getting it completely in, and I nearly always moaned and started heavy breathing during first minute. On top, after inserting my briefs were pulled up again so it was continually pressing and pushing the long thermometer.
I remember (and told in another chat before) when I was 11 or 12, I wanted to lower the pants which was pressing the thermometer in a mad way into me, that I felt like having to go peeing immediately. The doc first told me not to touch, and I had no chance to explain, so he thought I could be a rebellious teen (but I wasn't, only a bit impish and with a sly look) . He removed the thermometer, told me to turn on my back and hold my legs up in the air. The doctor took another thermometer, which was long, too, but looked huge. He told me something like I would have forced him to do that now, and in that moment I felt that thermometer pushed into my bum with force and, my impression, as far as possible. Of course I yelled at that moment, and during measuring, because similar to my dad he twisted it a few times, removed it and reinserted it two times. So this was lessons learned for me never touching the thermometer again.
