At your last physical who told you to undress?

Always at the end with doctor having me hop off table to drop. Save for two times with new doc once I was laying on table and unbuttoned and shimmied down for her to pull down the rest and the other time pull down on table then hop off to remove completely

At my current primary care, after taking vitals the nurse always says "Please get undressed, including socks, and put the gown on with the openning in front. You may leave your underwear on if your more comfortable, but they'll come off by the end of the exam."

I left them on the first time, but the doctor (female, Bangladeshi, mid-50s) seemed a little put out and sighed audibly during the abdominal exam when she opened the gown slightly to palpate further down and check femoral pulse. Since then I just take them off before putting the gown on.

@HodgeMan - either quite the coincidence or we have the same doctor! Same instructions from the nurse and same description.

Seriously, I started seeing a new primary care doctor at the end of last year because my previous two docs were pretty superficial. This new one was recommended by another provider who saw her as his primary care.

The medical assistant took me to the room and took my temperature, blood pressure, heart rate and oxygen level. Then she handed me a gown and said I needed to remove all my clothes and the nurse practitioner would be in to see me. I waited about 5 minutes. At the end of the exam while lying down she pulled up my gown and I was naked from the waist down. She asked for consent to do this part of the exam and I had said yes and also asked if I wanted a chaperone and I said no.

During my exams with my pediatrician, the nurse always told me to get undressed so when the doctor came in, I was already in my underwear on the exam table.

When I started seeing my first adult doc, he told me to undress to my underwear. He offered me a gowned but I never used it.

Had my annual exam today. Nobody told me to undress. Damn. I'm depressed!

The doctor told me to undress to my underwear, after we talked about the reason for the exam. I undressed in front of him. I had to take the bra off, and during the pelvic I got to wear a tshirt. So never totaly naked.

For my annual employment physical, the nurse takes me back to the exam room, instructs me to strip to my underwear, including removing my socks. She hands me a paper drape and leaves the room telling me that the doctor would be right in. When it was time for the genital and hernia exam, the doctor tells me to stand and lower my underwear. It the company’s contracted doctor happened to be a female that year, she would call the nurse in to chaperone the exam.

At my personal physician’s office, the nurse has never instructed me to remove any clothing. The doctor simply tells me to stand up and lower my pants while he dons his gloves. After the genital and hernia exam, he tells to turn around, bend over, and put my elbows on the exam table in order to perform the rectal exam.

I haven't undressed for a physical since I was in college, and it was not routine since I was in HS. Nowadays, they just have me lift up my shirt and loosen my pants.

At my last physical, my doctor started by discusisng my diet and exercise before he took my blood pressure, pulse, and temperature in my ear whilst fully dressed, and took a blood sample.

He then reminded me that I'd put on my form that I didn't want a "modesty suit" - a gown to you and me - and asked if I was sure as otherwise I'd be undressing to my underwear. I said I was ok and he then asked me to undress and put my clothes on a chair. He was typing away whilst I undressed to my red boxer briefs which stayed on until my genital exam when I was naked.

The nurse usually is the one to tell me to undress. My Urologist the doctor tells me to drop my draws.. It is just her and i in room.

My primary care physician who has essentially been my doctor all my life. She had me drop my pants & boxers for the genital & prostate examination. I don’t know if it’s because I live in a rural area, but I never seen the gowns shown in media and television.

At my last physical it was the doctor. She first speaks with you while you are dressed. She tells you to get undressed and walks out for a few minutes to give you privacy. At my wife's last exam, it was the medical assistant who instructed her to get undressed. She was at the gyn so she had to get fully undressed and put the blue paper gown on with the opening in the front. As she was getting undressed (she was pretty much fully naked and about to put the gown on) the doctor walked in. The doctor apologized and my wife was not upset since she has a good relationship with this doctor and has known her for a long time.

@JakeNewYork that has been my sub's experience. I just get listened to through my shirt. No undressing for our physicals.

Yeah. It is not at ALL like it was in the 1970s and 1980s. Younger people now will usually never know what that used to be like.

Part of it is the change in times, but another big factor is the age of the patient. They are simply less thorough with adult patients who are mostly healthy.

It's always the nurse who asks me to get undressed.

During last two exams on university doctor only checked my heart rhythm and blood pressure, so I can not call them physical exams. My last physical which contain more exams than above mentioned was army recruitment exam. On it, nurse told me to take off all clothes except of underwear and go to room with 4 doctors. During examination doctors checked my sight, hearing, height and weight, took measurements of my body, checked my heart rhythm, blood pressure, abdomen and private parts. After this I have a short conversation with doctors about my health habits (drinking, smoking etc.). After that, I could go to the locker room and get dressed, so I was only in underwear during whole exam.

Yes, that is true. To this day, the most comprehensive and detailed physicals I ever got in life were in my early to mid teens.

I have not undressed for a physical or for a dr in years like 40 years not counting operations of course

I had a fantastic doctor that was very thorough but she moved out of the area, so now I have no real choice but to go to high-volume practice. At my last physical, the ECG tech asked me to remove my shirt. Once that was done I was told I could put it back on. Didn’t remove any clothing for the NP as all she did was order labs and told me to come back in 6 months to repeat the labs. I have a family history of skin and testicular cancer so she referred me to a dermatologist and a urologist for screenings. Kinda feel like all this place wants to do is feed patients into a bunch of specialists to generate more billing opportunities.

Most physicals I've had, I'm told to strip down to my underwear, and it's usually the nurse that tells me as such.

In a recent appointment, it was by my doctor, and about 5 minutes-ish into the exam. She just needed enough time to get acclimated to the environment, and what she needed to do for my treatment before asking me to change. I was told, "to prepare" for my next protocol (in this case, injections). I stripped to my underwear, which for the time being, are cotton panties. She didn't really tell me how much to strip down to but, due to where she was working, i figured it was best to steip to my panties. I waited at least 5 to 10 minutes. Probably in between, around 7 minutes. Sitting on the table, in my gown that opens in the back. I also kept my socks on because the room I was in was cold.

In this case, all she did was reveal my backside as I needed injections in my neck, back of head, and all across my upper back. Occasionally, she'll give me injections in my lower back, so that's why I stripped to my panties, just in case. Every appointment with her, is a little different each time.

@Ccc ... exact same instructions from my current doctor. However, I never tie the back of the gown. I like knowing that my backside is fully exposed when the doc returns. After the BP and ENT portion of my physical exams, l am instructed to lower the top down to my waist where it remains until I am at the part where I need to stand and be fully exposed! After the hands on exam, I place my briefs back on and find myself once again flat on my back in order for him to conduct an EKG.
