I really don't go for exams per se. I am very very in tune with my body. Any abdominal pain I will feel say, leaning over countertop or barrier pressed against my torso. I also can casually punch myself all over my abdominal area just for fun (which I actually do) & I'll know something is wrong.
At my junior high football physical the doctor checked for a scrotal hernia, but didn't palpate (or percuss) our abdomins. I understand scrotal hernias aren't life threatening, but one of us could have gone out on the football field with a bad liver, pancreas etc., and it could've been dangerous. It was then I started questioning the motives & authority of physicians, & I decided I could check my own genatalia for anomalies (as they just hang there).
In fact I found 3 testicular problems on my own. The first resulted on a varicosele operation that I regret having as the pain inflicted on my illeoinguinal nerve far exceeded the varicosele discomfort. I wasn't warned by the greedy urologist, & I didn't have fertility concerns.
The other two anomalies were testicular false alarms. If I had followed the urogists' advise (to remove the testicals for a byopsy) I would be castrated now. (This is why I have utmost contempt for these........people.)
What gets me is that if I do come to my primary care doctor with a testicular concern & I am examined, he might have the assumption that he should, & may, do an incidental penis exam. No he may not! I am circumcised, & I handle my penis daily when I go to the bathroom, I'll know if something's wrong. What an insult to my intelligence! The proper protocol should be, "Mr. Jones (or Smith) would you like me to check your penis?" Not to say, "I AM going to check your penis". Or even just grab the thing w/o permission.
It also absolutely infuriates me when I see a doctor, & after the visit a nurse comes into the room & tells you the doctor wants to take a blood test, when he never even discussed it with you during your visit. If it's a blood test, or an exam, it should be discussed first & the doctor should proceed with permission. Under no circumstances will I tolerate a physician tell me to take off my clothes I'm the form of an imperative. Well, maybe if the doctor looks like the ones in my fantasies & finishes by extracting a sperm sample.
