Bear down

My girlfriend is always asked to "bear down" before she is examined. After a car accident she ended up in the ER and was examined for spinal injuries, the MD never asked her to "bear down". She was very surprised to say the least lol.

As a male I love to hear the doctor telling my wife to bear down. Both feeling inside her vagiana and anal. MMMM

My current doctor always requests that I bear down. It makes me feel strange to, so I never do. I simply try to relax. I am only asked for the rectal exam, not for any other portion of the exam, such as the bimanual. I am asked to cough whenever a tenaculum is used, but I don't know -- I have a hard time coughing on command, and so do it very lamely.

Trust me, it sounds just as awkward and forced when guys do it, and we have plenty more experience.

My GF usually tells about that. the dr used to say bear down when her rectovaginal exam takes place. Also dr says "it will little uncomfort for you" to her.

"Bearing down" does indeed relax the anal sphincter, allowing much easier insertion of the examining finger into the rectum.

Hi all,

Yep had first rectal exam this year and she asked me to bear down twice, once I think she just looked as I did it and then second time it was when she had put her finger against the opening and asked me again to bear down before she slid her finger in.

I've been asked to tighten my pelvic muscles. But never bear down. Although, the idea does seem hot to me!

My GF always is asked to bear down before her rectal vag exam.. And after for the rectal exam as well..

My wife has been told, “now you are going to need to push like you are trying to go to the bathroom” as the NP changed her glove when she was younger. I tell her bear down at home though!

I definitely enjoy it♥️💥❗️

Yes I have always been asked to bare down prior to dre / rectovaginal examination.

My Dr retired so to start with the new Dr I was a bit startled when told I was to disrobe and he gave me a full exam including a recto vaginal exam. Wow, scooting down that table, I knew here it comes as my legs began to open wide ,spread eagle, oh no, then those familiar words, bear down mam, like your having a bowl movement. Ugh, so yes and he slid his finger in right then. I believe it relaxes the sphincter for easy insertion.

It is a great classic of certain practitioners to ask to bare before the anal introduction.

Pushing or coughing causes the sphincter to relax.

Personally, I almost systematically perform a recto-vaginal examination at the end of the consultation and I never have any difficulty.

The important thing is that the patient is relaxed and has no fear of the practitioner's gestures.

Let's be careful about the request to "bare" we have all experienced unpleasant leaks if the patient performs too well.

If necessary, it may be better to ask him to cough.

My doctor always says,"now the part we all hate. I need you to bear down for me." She says the same thing to all her patients having a pelvic or other problems there. At least I have heard her say it to my sister, my sisters' girlfriend, and my sister's girlfriend's niece. So I would say she probably says it to everyone. The funny thing is that it really isn't the part we hate. We like it because it is the last thing she does and we know it. After being stretched poked, fingered, etc. we can get out of the stirrups, get dressed and head home usually. A few times we have gone to the mall after because the mall is just down the road.

Ok, but this is not the same request as asking you to contract around his/her fingers, correct?

When I do a play exam I always ask my partner to do this. She says the same thing, tells me that the doctor asks her to do this while she’s having an exam. I do this and yeah, it’s much easier to insert digits during the pelvic exam.

Ive never had a rectal exam but my girlfriend has me lay in fetal position and tells me to take a deep breath and bear down before she slides her finger deep in my ass.

I love being told to bear down because I know what's about to happen next. I like anxiously waiting on my side, completely exposed, and feeling the cold lubricant being pressed against my most private hole.

This is not unique to just the examination of a female. Hope it doesn't ruin the fantasy!

The posts are in the gynaecological exam forum.

I had my first rectal exam recently and the nurse practitioner didn't ask me to bear down. I thought maybe they would but no, just warned she was putting her finger in.

I’ve been to exams with my partner and heard the doctor say “you’ll feel some pressure now“ to her as they‘ve started recto-vaginal exam with their gloved hand.

When I gave my friend maria a rectal exam I told her what I was going to do and she was nervous at first just I guess never had it done before but I assured her she be fine.. so what I had her do was since she was laying on her stomach I had her spread her butt apart lubed her up and said take a deep breath on the count of 3 and by the time I reached 3 my finger was almost in her butt and when 3 came it was already in and she was like oh that ain’t that bad so maybe me relaxing her helped

I have never had my rectum examined in a professional setting, visually or physically. it surprises me as i have always kept up with yearly exams!

@pinkhoney I wonder if it depends on the physician, or if there are aspects in the woman that result in a physician giving a rectal exam whereas the same physician would not give one to another woman.

@pinkhoney and @Pecan_nutjob -

If you are expecting a rectovaginal as part of a routine physical it's probably going to come from an older physician during the pelvic, so you can chalk that up primarily to training at the time and with the medical school they attended....they just include that in their exam protocol regardless of how things may have changed over time.

Another common occurrence is the doctor out there who perform a rectovaginal at a girl's first pelvic and then not until an older age level.

Aside from that it often becomes a matter of performing the exam as part of diagnosis of endometriosis, obscure pelvic pain, suspected prolapse, rectocele or enterocele, and pelvic floor diagnosis. If you have a retroverted uterus your chances of having a rectal goes up sharply. Part of the reason this is falling by the wayside though is the use of improved imaging techniques including use of mri, and etc.

They always ask that before a rectal exam

They always ask that before a rectal exam

Don’t know why they ask that for a females rectal vaginal exam, never asked that for my DREs. Is there a difference between a rectal vaginal versus a rectal only for females? Or do they ask for the female patients to “bear down” for both?

Perhaps they don’t ask men to bear down for a rectal exam is because men fart and women don’t. 😀😀

I've had two rectal exams and the doctor told me both times to "bear down" as he slid a finger up my anus - It must have helped me relax my anal sphincter muscles, as I was very embarrassed about the whole procedure!

I always ask the patient to bear down. It relaxes the sphincter and allows for easier introduction of my finger. Just seems kind plus I like the verbiage

Had it said many times. Makes it easier apparently.
