Thank you, speedvogel. You can be sure that I have been doing a whole lot of reading on the subject. I am absolutely sure I do NOT want a hysterectomy along with the removal of my fibroid. I am also aware that many gynecological surgeons these days will opt for hysterectomy over a myomectomy because a hysterectomy is much easier to perform. For them, it's mostly a matter of making about the same money for less work in a shorter amount of time. But for me, it's about keeping my body parts. These days, it's almost like uteri - and many times even ovaries along with them - have become "the new tonsils," as far as some surgeons are concerned. But we sure as hell don't see urologists telling their patients, "OK, your prostate is shot. Oh, and while we're in there taking care of it, we might as well remove your testes and penis because you're not planning on having any children at your age, are you?. After all, if your penis and testes are left in place, there is always the chance you might get cancer in them eventually." Not gonna happen. And so many gynecologists today ever so conveniently leave out the fact that women who have their uteri removed have a much higher rate of ovarian cancer than women who've held onto their uteri. Astoundingly, this is often the reason given for also removing the ovaries along with the uterus.
My own mother did not reach menopause until the age of fifty-seven. So, as I see it, I very likely have a good while to go without being subjected to a premature menopause via hysterectomy.
I have been doing even more internet research on the topic since my last gyn exam, and have already emailed the HERSFoundation yesterday asking for recommendations to doctors who are not afraid to perform just a myomectomy without a hysterectomy. I guess I will probably hear back from them this week.
I have also researched the New York State Center for Medical Consumers to see which doctors have performed the most myomectomies recently. From their list, I have typed the names into the "RateMD" site to see what former patients' experiences are. From that, I've pretty much narrowed down my search to two doctors, one of whom is on my health plan. So let's see how this goes.
Anyway, thank you again, speedvogel.
