Foley Catheter -- How long before incontinence?

I have been using foley's for ~5 years. no incontinence to report. I will say that my bladder control has been greatly reduced over the past 5 years. However, that is most likely attributed to 24/7 diapers and never holding it.

I use a 20-24 FR depending on how nasty i feel,, has remained in for 3-4 days with a small amount of leakage for a few hours but then i am normal ,,I give myself one day to recover before returning to work been doing this for about 5-6 years no problem yet….

The bladder is a master at self-repair. When damaged by infection or injury, the organ can mend itself quickly, calling upon specialized cells in its lining to repair tissue and restore a barrier against harmful materials concentrated in urine.

In a medical use setting an indwelling (foley) is changed 1 per month . If you continually use a catheter for 2-3 years , your bladder will become incompetent to expand and muscles will atrophy , meaning your bladder will only hold 50-100 ML before being overloaded an having an incontinent episode you will have low Volume high frequency uncontrolled wetting . Incontinent such as this is what all the grocery store common medical diapers are for not high pressure high volume streams , a babbling brook versus a firehouse ,you can get 4-6 hours of babling brook vs 3 seconds of a firehouse before the diaper is over saturated and useless .

I wear a Asid Bonz silicone foley Catheter with a catheter valve in my underpant for up to 6 weeks. I go to work with it and nobody recognizes it.

After 6 weeks catheter comes out and i have no Problem with Inkontinence.

My wife has bladder retention issues due to MS. She’s had an SP cath for four tears, and never peed through her urethra since. Last summer she had laparoscopic abdominal surgery and all of a sudden she pees urethrally at night, but never during the day. My guess is that laying down the urethra is just as easy path as the cath….but why after the surgery when she went so long with never going that way. Docs have no idea.
