Hi! I'm new here.
I recently saw a brand new internist for a physical. The nurse called me back, did weight and vitals. She said since this was my first time here the doctor may want to talk before I change.
A few moments later the doctor came back and did the history and chit chat. Then he asked when my last pelvic was and I told him it was some time last year but I couldn't remember exactly when so he said he could take care of that for me.
He pulled out a gown and asked me to undress and he would be back. Just about as soon as I got back on the table he knocked. He came in with the nurse. This is the first time i'd ever had a doctor bring in a chaperone, but it was this was a new place for me so I just figured that's how they do things.
The first thing he did was ask me to lie back and he positioned my feet in the stirrups. He did the pelvic exam and pap and then put my legs back down and told me to sit up. He said he would check my breasts next and pulled the gown down and off my arms and started and the breast exam. He had me lie down and continued the breast exam. He then had me sit up and put the gown back through my arms. He looked at the nurse and said that would be all. She left. I was a little taken confused because I thought that meant the exam was over.
After she left he took his stethoscope off the counter and listened to my heart and lungs. Then he went on to check my eyes, ears, nose, throat, felt my glands. Then he had me lie back. He pulled out a paper sheet and put it over my waist and legs. He lifted up the gown and checked my abdomen. He checked my joints and had me sit up and checked my reflexes. He said he wanted to check my blood pressure himself so the exam ended with him taking my blood pressure.
About 2 months ago I felt a lump in my breast, and I went to him to check it out. The nurse brought me into the room, took my vitals and told me to undress from the waist up and gave me a cape to cover my top half. The doctor came in and asked me a some questions and then said he would come right back with the nurse. I stopped him and said does she really need to be in here? He said no -- not at all if you don't want her in here. I said no it makes me uncomfortable and I really don't think it's necessary. Immediately he went to the computer to type something ( I wonder if has to document that I rejected the chaperone?). He did the exam and then (again) checked my blood pressure himself.
I'm wondering if others have had chaperones present during their exam and what their feelings are about it. I've never had a chaperone present before and I'm glad to know it's optional.
