Coloplast has introduced a self irrigation system targeted to paraplegic and spina bifida patients. Previously independently living persons found it difficult to self administer enemas, and suffered fecal incontinence when going out, or engaging in active living. These embarrassing occurrences limited their life styles. Peristeen allows these persons to self administer enemas.
It comes complete with a "control unit" a water bag, and disposable catheters. One sits on the toilet, fills the bag with warm water, and plugs in one of the catheters. Wetting the catheter causes it to self lubricate. The user inserts the catheter into the anus, and pumps up the balloon, using the bulb attached to the control unit. Now the fluid may be instilled, 1200 cc's or so. The control unit now may be set to 'deflate' and the catheter removed. The user may evacuate the bowels.
Zity readers may google 'peristeen' to find more information, videos, instructions, testimonials, and a warning from the UK that bowel perforation might be 1:100K risk. Cost: I found a site that sold them in Australia for $290 AUS which is about $310 USD. If the system were about $50 I might try it.
