MALES - Your first adult physical

I was 22 and recently graduated from undergraduate school. I had been accepted to business school and needed a physical form completed for the university. I got the name of an internist from a family member and scheduled an appointment. I went to the appointment from a summer job I had at a bank so I showed up in a dress shirt and tie along with dress slacks and cap toe oxfords. The doctor had his office in a building with multiple other physicians who shared a common reception area. I checked in and waited anxiously since this was the first new doctor I had seen since age 11. The doctor came out with the patient he had just finished with and called my name. His portion of the office which he led me into was a private office with his desk and an examination room beyond this which was visible from his personal office space. He had me sit across from his desk, I handed him the form I had from the school, he glanced at the form and the history portion of it which I had completed. He told me to go into the next room, take my shirt off, and have a seat on the table. The table was a rather high flat top bench with an upholstered top with a table paper roll. There was a four legged step stool next to the table which was necessary to use to mount the table due to its height. I took off my shirt and set it on a side chair near the table and stepped up and sat down. The doctor came in and came over to me. He put the blood pressure cuff on me and took my pressure. He then did an exam of my eyes. He felt my neck and then listed to my heart and chest. Then he said "loosen the top of your pants and lie back." I was not exactly positive what he meant but I decided to unbuckle my belt, unhook the pants, and unzip about half way. I must have done what he wanted because he proceeded without a comment. He then stood over me and felt the abdomen. Then he took a step back and said "step up on the platform facing me and drop your pants AND (emphasized) shorts." The sick feeling hit my stomach since I know I am going to have to let a strange doctor see my penis for the first time. I was almost quivering as I stood on the stool and finished unzipping and then lowering the pants and my white briefs to about mid thigh. He said "turn your head and cough" twice and did not even touch me. Then he said "ok, we're done."

I thought it was an effective experience for someone who gets into embarrassment because the lack of undress at the beginning made it unclear how much of my body he was going to see. It was also awkward having to take down pants and shorts while perched on the step stool. It is always awkward to me having a clothes person look at my genitals

I have also thought in the aftermath of the exam about his use of the phrase “drop your pants AND shorts.” It made me think some guy in the past had just dropped his pants and left his shorts up when he said “drop your pants.” Regardless of the reason he used the phrase, I found it condescending and it added to the embarrassment of the moment.

@examdoc You don't mention actually taking your shoes off never mind your socks in your exam. I'd actually find that more embarrassing than just being naked for the genital exam, standing there with my shoes and socks still on and my pants and boxers pulled down.

I did not have any of my clothes, other than my shirt, removed. I found this added to the awkwardness of the moment.

My first adult physical was similar to as you described with the addition that even my polo shirt remained on for the entire exam. I was dressed from head to toe, including socks and shoes and the contents of my pockets.

The genital exam at the end was quite awkward due to my fully dressed state. Whereas in other exams where the transition to the genital exam is smoother, this exam required me to undress at a moment’s notice directly in front of the doctor.

Lifting a gown or lowering underwear is still an unusual sensation, but standing up in front of a waiting doctor who’s directly facing you, undoing your belt, unbuttoning your pants, unzipping your pants, and sliding your pants and underwear down to mid thigh with everything else on is exceptionally unusual. I actually felt much more exposed than in other exams where I had much less on and a large part of that can be attributed to the private act of unfastening my clothes having to be done with someone waiting and watching.

My first adult exam was not long after i turned 21, for a bus driving licence application,

my surprise came immediately as the Doctor was my childhood GP, whom although retired still performed medicals for private practice, he was an authoritative medic that i respected,

after only a very brief examination and auscultation, i was standing in just underwear, and he reading from my notes commented "ah yes we had you circumcised" thrilled thinking i was about to get a very through genital examination, i was most disapointed that he said "okay you can get dressed"

I am currently 47, and still have not had a real full medical examination since i was 5.

my cousins in New Zealand have a full exam every year, it seems in England though preventative medicals are not valued sadly.

Saul Goodman's first adult exam below reminded me of an older doctor that I had years ago who also had me bend over and grab my ankles or knees for the rectal exam. He must have been an old military doctor because I have never had any other doc do a rectal exam that way. I have almost always been bent over the exam table with my chest or elbows on the table. I thought that it was weird at the time because he had an exam table but it was kind of low to the floor.

First “adult” physical was in college. I actually don't recall many of the details other than it was the standard exam, strip as you go done by a female PA at the time. It ended with dropping the underwear for a check of genitals and hernia, with instructions on doing regular self-exams. No DRE or anything like that at the time. Most of the questions asked were the standard ones, though I think they were more worried about screening for STIs than anything else.

Since I never had a pediatrician and always had physicals with 1 of 2 family doctors at a private practice, my 1st physical as an adult just seemed to morph from annual physicals while growing up.

My 1st physical with someone different was a pre employment physical when I was 22 with the plant physician, who would go on to conduct annual physicals on me for several years after.

In that 1st physical, there was a urine and blood screening for drugs. Either as she was about to draw my blood or gave me a cup to pee in, the nurse had asked me if I had anything in my system, and that they were checking. I remember her saying like they were looking for things like marijuana, but I don't remember her mentioning any other drugs, although she may very well have mentioned cocaine.

I sat in a small booth for hearing evaluation and had to raise my hand when I heard various tone beeps. I had an extensive eye exam, involving which note the line passes through, cryptic numbers in dotted circles, choosing closed circle in each group of 4, what note the line is going through, the number the arrow is pointing at, the depth circle that seems to stand out in 3D among the group of 4, etc.

I blew through a hose on a big exhale, as a screen captured a graph of the power of my exhale. The nurse did that glaucoma test where they blow air pressure into your eye. If the nurse did anything else, i can't remember.

Then it came time for the doctor, who had his own little bathroom, where i would be instructed to go into to strip down to my undies. No gown at the time. I sat on the exam table while he did HEENT, etc, and maybe testing knee reflexes, before being asked to lie back on the table. After auscultating and palpating me, all of which I had been used to, he lifted my briefs and instructed me to cough as he checked me for hernia. Didn't do a testicular exam or examine my penis, and didn't do a DRE. Checking me for hernia was the last thing I remember him doing before being told I could go ahead and get dressed.

This was a new twist, in that usually I would be standing and instructed to drop my pants for a hernia check with the family doctor. Now I was lying on the table, and the doctor was manipulating my briefs himself. At the time, I wasn't fond of being touched by men, so i didn't appreciate it then, as much as the looking back on it now factor. And now that I've become somewhat of an exhibitionist, I like thinking of the fact that a condition to be employed by this company was that I had to have this doctor grab my briefs and lower them to expose me to him while lying down on the table.

I recently had my first physical since high school. It was pretty basic stuff, nurse showed me in and asked me if I wanted a physical or a checkup. I asked her the difference and she couldnt really tell me so I said whatever is the most comprehensive. She gave me a gown and told me to get undressed and keep my underpants on. I did all of that and sat and waited. Doctor came in and we talked for a while. The exam itself was pretty basic - steth, look in ears, mouth, etc. Told me to get up and stand by the wall and drop my pants. Quick feel of the boys and then pressed on my abdomen to check for a hernia and that was it. I was waiting for the “turn your head and cough” but maybe I am too old for that now?

17 army in line with a hundred 200 other guys in our underwear to go all damn day actually a couple days

Three months before I turned 15. It was a mandatory school physical.

I have rarely ever gone to the doctor whilst healthy, but my first one after adulthood would have been this time when I was 16 or 17 and my dad just randomly scheduled me a physical which included urine testing, I don't really know what that was about. He was the one always saying it was cool if I wanted to have some weed, so it sure wasn't paranoia about that.

But the first one I ever, like, elected to have was when I was about 22, and I had some hard stomach swelling that (to me) seemed inconsistent with regular weight gain (which I'd had in the past), so I managed to apply for low-income clinic-specific care and see a doc about it… She was this nice lady who had silver hair but looked too young for it. And after discussing the issue she's like “well you're establishing new care here” or however they put it, and asked if I'd be okay with getting a physical. I said fine, and she got out a gown and said she'd leave the room while I undress, but I was like “nah it'll only take a second and I don't need a gown” and just got naked. Good thorough exam, she checked everything. No diagnosis, but we had a good long chat about a lot of health stuff while I sat on the table. Renewed my old asthma inhaler prescription since the non-prescription one I'd been taking was speeding my heart up too much. Said the swelling was just fat, which was new to me, but later I realized oh yeah, kidney fat is much harder and denser than the subcutaneous stuff, and I had an office job now so that was gonna happen.

That was basically the last physical I had before my current health problems began, during which time I've only had like two total, because by that time doctors just did not seem interested in doing examinations anymore.

Age 20. US Army. Hot young PA (supervised by a frumpy old man doctor). It was also my first DRE. Who does a DRE on a 20 year old boy? US Army, that's who.

In 1977 we had just joined a health plan. I had no idea what to expect, but the nurse asked me to remove all clothes, and put on a cloth gown while she got the doctor. The doctor had me remove the gown, lay on my back on the exam table, where he checked all the usual places. He poked and prodded in places where no man had gone before. Then he asked me to roll on my side, while he grabbed a rubber glove, some lube and proceeded to give me a DRE to my surprise. He then asked me to stand up and examined my genitals thoroughly. When he was done I was told me to get dressed, head down to the lab for a urine sample and blood work.

I guess it was in the army, what we call in France “Les 3 jours” (translation : the 3 days, which last half a day in reality ^^) and what you call in the US I guess “the physical” (it's about deciding if your up to it or not).

I undressed to my underwear but no more. No genitals check. It was in mid-90s.

And a few years later, I had one at work (mandatory every 3 or 5 years). This one i already talked about here, I thought I was gonna end up naked as the lady doctor pulled down my boxer without warning, but no, she stopped right before any private parts were out 😁

Never had a full physical ever since.

Im 25… had my first adult physical in 2015.

honestly, it was more feet and extremities than everything. I was barefoot the whole tiime… they didn’t even hesitate when i walked in “shoes and socks off..” and way after when the exam was done, I was still barefoot. I had pretty much every test on my feet done When i was 18.

At 19 years old, school medical check-up, in briefs that the doctor spread in a standing position, he just looked.

Then at 20, for the day of examination for the army, after a battery of tests, sight, hearing, weighing, measuring, chest X-ray, urine sample, psychological; examination in front of the doctor, naked, auscultation, blood pressure, visual control of the genitals + hernia check, spinal column examination with a look between the buttocks and verification of the sole of the feet.

@V10 can i ask what is meant by “visual control of the genitals”?

I am 24 now and my first adult physical was when I was 21. Growing up going to the pediatrician it was a typical exam asking questions, checking my development and then for the genital exam would lift up my boxers after feeling my abdomen and feel around while I was lying down. I was pretty anxious going to the adult doctor to see what would happen. It was more thorough in asking questions about my health and the he did a normal exam after asking me to get into my boxers…he feels my groin muscles while I am lying down and then has me stand up for a more thorough genital exam and I had never stood up before. I have to pull my boxers down to my knees and he does a hernia check, feels my testicles and penis…the standing up part is new to me and really embarrassing.

My first adult physical was at the military induction center. I only remember bits and pieces of it. Everybody was naked, and the rooms were cold, which was probably done to keep penises shriveled. I remember a long line for the genital and rectal exams. Dr sat on a wheeled stool and thoroughly examined penis and testicles and hernia check Then you turned around and bent over ans spread your cheeks while the dr thoroughly examined your anus, pulling it apart, then did the deep finger check Telling the note-taker the details, whether it was tight, loose, or had any lessons. Everyone in line saw everything. I'm sure they checked more, but that is all I remember.

My first adult physical was this week. It was actually my first ever that I know of, as they're not routine in the UK. I'm not including a more basic wellness check I had last year, which was mostly a quick blood pressure and blood test (which was still useful - I can describe that if anyone would like).

I will tell you what I remember or sticks in my mind, but feel free to ask any questions you like if you want more detail.

I had booked a private health assessment, in part because I've been pushing myself harder with exercise and becoming a bit more in tune with my body lately, so wanted a general picture of my health to confirm everything was in working order. It was also a good opportunity to bring up a few things with the doctor which I wouldn't have otherwise made an appointment for.

The assessment was split into three parts - some measurements and tests with a healthcare assistant, a consultation and examination with a doctor and an exercise stress test with an assistant/technician.

When I booked the assessment, I was told I should bring clothes to exercise in and that I'd need to give a urine sample when I arrived.

The appointment was in the morning and I had a little bit of a journey to get there. I dressed in what I'd usually wear on a day off - some comfortable chinos, a long-sleeved t-shirt, a checked overshirt and trainers. Knowing I'd be exercising, I wore the underwear I normally wear to the gym - some white, lightweight slip briefs (quick drying and stretchy) and white socks. I packed my usual 7" gym shorts, a light weight vest top (with a sort of breathable mesh fabric) and my cross training shoes.

On the journey, I was very conscious that I needed to be able to give a urine sample so I had one pee and then thought I'd better hold on. Then I drank a bottle of water to make sure I'd be able to deliver! I arrived a bit early and wasn't supposed to enter until ten minutes before, so I walked around a bit and went to a cafe, starting to feel a bit desperate to pee at that point.

When I checked into the centre, the man at reception gave me a plastic pot and told me that they would need a urine sample, and directed me to the toilet. I find that a bit awkward - being publicly handed a pot and sent off to urinate in it, something which feels a bit private. Once I'd filled the pot, I had to put it in a little cupboard just across the corridor - again I felt a bit embarrassed carrying a pot of my urine across a public space, although there was no-one there to see.

I then sat in the waiting room, before being called in by a female health assistant, who was very friendly and we chatted about various non-medical things. She explained that she'd be taking some measurements and doing a few tests. Those included weight, height, spine, lungs and hearing. For the weight and body composition, she asked if I would mind taking off my shoes and socks, so I did that and stood on the scales. I briefly sat down before she measured my height. Sitting down again, I looked at my feet and noticed the feeling of the air on them while they rested on top of my shoes and wondered if I should put my socks back on, but waited until she said I could go ahead and put them back on.

Next was a test with a spinal mouse, which she ran down my spine while I took three different positions, including bending forward. She had asked if it was okay if I took off my shirt - I assumed she meant that I should take everything off the top, but double checked that I should remove my t-shirt too, and she said yes, it needed to be bare skin. Just before she started the test, she also asked me to pull my trousers and pants down a little so that she could access the whole of my spine. I did that, exposing some of my crack and asking if that was enough. In those moments, I don't mind being shirtless and don't find it embarrassing, but do feel a bit awkward about where I should stand and feel a bit self-conscious in the middle of the room waiting to be told what to do and where to go. It would be less awkward if they said clearly “please take off your shirt and t-shirt and then stand over here facing in this direction”.

After those measurements were taken, I put my tops back on and completed a lung test and hearing test. I felt a bit embarrassed during the test for my lungs - having to wrap my mouth around a large plastic tube, I thought I might look a bit funny and sort of undignified, but I'm sure they don't really notice.

After all that, and explaining some of the results, I went back to the waiting room until I was called in my the doctor. I will describe that part of the assessment later today 😃

The doctor called me in next - she was really friendly and made me feel comfortable. I sat opposite her at the other side of her desk, and we talked through some things I'd written in the pre-appointment forms for discussion, and the results of tests I'd completed online beforehand, including a memory and reactions test, and the results of the measurements and tests I'd just had done.

She asked about something I wanted to show her on the sole of my foot and to point out something related on the other foot, so I took my shoes and socks off and she came round to look while I stayed seated, touching my foot and then apologising (I think she felt she should have asked first, but I didn't mind at all). Then she sat back down again - I went to put my socks back on but she said I didn't need to as she would have another look in a minute when I was lying down.

Then it came to the physical examination. She was saying we'll take your blood and examine you, rest assured if there's a physical cause of one of the things I had mentioned we'll find it. She asked if I minded if she examined me - of course I said no - and I followed her over to the back of the room where there was an exam table and a blue curtain which was hanging fairly close to the table, so that when she stood in front of me she was quite close.

She left the curtained area, leaving it mostly closed so I couldn't be seen from the rest of the office, and asked if I would mind undressing. She said I could just take my top off, or I could undress to my underwear if I liked - she commented that she wasn't shy if I wasn't.

So I undressed to my underwear - taking my tops off first and then my trousers, folding them and laying them on a chair at the end of the bed. My shoes and socks were still under the other chair by her desk. While I was doing that she commented that it was good that I'd booked a check up myself, and I made conversation about getting more in tune with my body but also not really knowing what's normal or not when you're only comparing to yourself.

When she came back I felt awkward for a second as I didn't know quite what to do other than just stand there in front of her. She gave me a general look over and then had me sit on the table first, while she said she was feeling my neck for my lymph nodes, looked in my ears with an instrument, asked me to open my mouth and say “aah” while she looked in, and listened to my heart with a stethoscope on both sides of my chest. I didn't feel it all that much so it mustn't have been very cold. She also checked the skin on my back and placed the stethoscope on my back in different places about four times while asking me to breathe deeply.

She asked me to lie back, and took a few blood pressure readings - which were a bit high, but she suggested it might just be the setting. While one of the readings was being taken, she had another look at my foot, and while I was lying down she also checked me over for moles, prodded my stomach in a few places, and asked me how my psoriasis was doing, which I pointed to in a few spots.

At one point, she asked me to stand - I was at the long edge of the bed and she was between me and the curtain - and she look some measurements with a tape measure, including of my waist.

When most of the exam was done, and I was sitting on the white paper sheet on the table, she asked if I would like her to examine my testicles. I said yes please, and that it's something I know I should do but never do, partly for fear of finding something, which I know is illogical. She said she'd examine them and show me how I should to it, that testicular cancer is something particularly affecting men of my age, and said I could stand or lie down, whichever I preferred. I had to think for a second, I wasn't really sure and it felt awkward having to decide quickly, but I said I would stand, and stood up. She asked me to lower my underwear to ‘here’, gesturing to just above her knees. So I bent forward slightly and pulled my briefs down to my knees, which immediately fell to my ankles when I straightened up.

I was too busy watching my balls to notice if she was sitting on a chair or crouched down - but saw she was wearing blue gloves. She very gently rolled each of my balls in her fingers in turn, and explained that she was feeling the cord etc. That bit wasn't embarrassing like I'd feared, I felt quite comfortable, apart from when I moved my arm automatically to feel my ball after she'd explained, but then stopped as I wasn't sure if I was supposed to or not. I had a moment of vanity looking down at my dick, thinking it looked respectable and hadn't shrunk (not that it is of any consequence!).

Then it was done and she said I could pull my underwear back up. She suggested that my boyfriend and I could remind each other to check our balls, or even check them for the other, which is a good idea, as well as being funny.

While I was standing in my underwear, she commented that my body looked good, and a good balance, and that I wasn't too slim etc. It wasn't inappropriate, I think she was partly saying it as we'd earlier talked about my exercise routine and that I'd like to gain a small amount of weight, and a little bit of extra muscle, as well as it being for enjoyment and stress relief.

She asked if I'd brought gym kit (I had) and then suggested I get changed back into that, since my exercise stress test was next. She left the curtained off area while I changed, although I had to go to her desk to get my socks and the shoes I'd arrived in. We chatted a little about my gym clothes, and then when I was ready she wrote me a prescription before showing me back to the waiting room.

I was glad she was so friendly and that the examination came after a fairly long chat, I might have been more nervous otherwise.

I'll describe the exercise test in the relevant thread soon.. 😃

My first adult physical was with 16. I was very embarassed and shy Since it was the first Time i was nude and had a rectal exam.

Pre-college physical with my father's doctor. First for me in having an EKG … DRE … and being completely naked about halfway through! This exam has remained in my memories for nearly 45 years.

First exam I remember without my mom in the room was a school/athletic exam. I remember going to my regular doctors office but having a female doctor. The entire exam was in just my gown but when it came time for the hernia/genital exam she excused herself. She came back with a female nurse that stood in the corner while the doctor lifted my gown to continue the exam. I can’t say that I was very exposed but the nurses position in the room gave her a view if she just looked. Not sure it was really necessary but looking back the anticipation of just sitting on the exam table waiting was killer.

Hey guys, do you remember your first adult physical? How old were you? New doctor?

Just shy of my 18th birthday. A physical exam for college. My dad brought me to his doctor for the exam.

Describe the exam.

Dad's doctor was a retired Army doctor and he examined me like I was getting drafted ! I had to strip completely nude for the exam - and my father was in the room with me. Everything was checked head to toe. The big difference from the exams that I had with my pediatrician is that my father's doctor, after examining my genitals, told me to turn around, bend over, and grab my ankles. I had my first prostate exam during that physical.

This was back in the mid 1970s.

I was 19 at the time, half a century ago. I had to go for a pre-employment exam to a doctor working for the Medical Health Service of the National Police. This was for an office job at a local police station. After being questioned I was told to go into a cubicle and strip to my underwear. Being quite nervous I was a bit clumsy in there and accidentally brushed my hand against the wall which caused a small wound on my hand. When I stepped into the exam room the doctor did make a remark about that. The exam followed the usual pattern I was accustomed to from the school doctor. I was laying on the exam table when he asked me to blow hard on the back of my hand. This is the usual way a hernia exam is performed in the Netherlands. I was still wearing my underpants so I was a bit surprised by this, he only lifted the waistband of my underwear and slit a finger in to feel along the edge of my groin.

Shortly after this I had to go to another pre-employment exam. This doctor operated in a different way. He told me to take off all of my clothing including my underwear. So I entered the exam room totally naked where he was waiting for me in his white coat.

Until I was 20, I had various medical exams (illness, pre-employment, military), but I think the question is more about a preventive checkup, like many people have every year. As a young adult, I didn't have any, and it wasn't until I was 33 that I went back to a new doctor.

I was extremely nervous, and he noticed; I think it bothered him. I had to undress down to my briefs (dark green, if I remember correctly—it's surprising I even recall that detail). I wasn't sure whether I should pull them down or not. I was probably a little anxious about it, but I didn't have to, and in the end, the exam was routine, I don't remember anything out of the ordinary. I went back to that doctor twice, and then no more preventive checkups for 20 years! (I'm now 68 yo)

I would have been 14. It was prior to my going to prep school, which might, or might not, explain the switch from the pediatrician, where appointments included my brother, and mother, to my parents' internal medicine doctor. The exam was unforgettable. A nurse took me from the waiting room to his exam room. I was told to take everything off except my underwear. The doctor did the entire exam, starting with height, and weight, to eyes, ears, mouth, heart, lungs while seated. Lying back for more listening, tapping, feeling. I stood up, dropped my briefs, had a hernia check. I don't recall any examination of my penis, and testicles. I was asked to do X number of jumping jacks so he could recheck my heart rate. My briefs remained around my knees, fell to my ankles because the entire time, he had ordered me to do this, or that, and there had been no order to pull my briefs back up first.

How can you do jumping jacks with your briefs around your knees or ankles ?
