If a nurse who took care of me at home is any indicator, no more than two 1- to 2-quart enemas containing a mild soap, each followed by sipping 8 ounces of a solution to restore electrolytes.
She was very careful with me, as I was seriously backed up for taking an excessive amount of medication. She was able to get about 1 quart of mild Castile soap solution into me, which was very uncomfortable to retain. She was trying to be gentle, but she said I had to keep the solution in, and I was nearly crying when I was finally able to release. I didn’t want another enema, but she had me sipping orange juice for about 30 minutes.
She said I should have a second enema, and I could slowly take a full 2 quarts and wouldn’t have severe cramps. She felt there was a much more to come out, and was she ever accurate! Very little Castile soap in the warm water, in a hospital enema bag. What a difference that second enema made! So comfortable I was quietly moaning, which was embarrassing.
However, getting to the point here, since that experience nearly 40 years ago, I have never taken more than two enemas at a time, mostly just one has been enough because I know how. And I am careful to restore electrolytes. I’ve had a couple of after enema situations in the past when I have been lightheaded, and it’s no fun.
