I very recently had an echocardiogram of my heart. Outpatient procedure at the hospital. Also had a resting EKG done in office at PCP. I'll avoid the long story and just say my heart is just fine. Completely normal on and EKG and the Echo study. I've got a "condition" called White Coat Syndrome....Whereas my blood pressure and heart rate both go through the roof anytime I think someone wants to measure either one. No, they don't have to be wearing a white coat. It doesn't even have to be a medical professional or even carried out in a medical setting. What it does mean, is that my pump near thumps out of my chest any time I am in a clinical setting. Especially something like this.....
Wife went with me as her presence seems to calm me down to some extent. The little tech came and got me and on the walk back I explained her the situation where my heart was pounding and most likely would be through the entire process....Real sweet and.......Kinda genius at same time tells me it is no big deal, happens to way more folks than I would think. That alone, relaxed me considerably......Next, and I had already addressed this with the wife, but I asked if I was going to be able to hear it in the room such as is usual on TV.....She said she kept hers turned down, so no, but some techs left volume up all day. I'm near certain it would drive me crazy being a tech and hearing that all day. As much as I love the heartbeat, hearing strangers hearts all day every day would get old quick. I think? I told her that was probably best, as hearing it might not do any good to slow it down.
I was on left side the whole time best I recall. Took maybe 20 minutes. I could see the screen, but it was at the head of the bed, so just kinda could barely see the screen. My heart rate did slow down over course of the study, but I don't think it ever dropped below 100bpm. I asked her to turn it up at one point just to hear it ever so briefly. Oh.....Me being a full on Cardiophile and all, be kind of pathetic of me to not hear it even for a second or two.
The wife was at foot of bed on other side of room with clear view of monitor. Of course she's not a Cardiophile....Even a Med Fetishist for that matter, so whoop dee doo on her for being there. She is fully aware of my little kinks though. God bless her for her tolerance.
