No fad or fashion is ever gone forever. These things just come and go, then shaved, then not, then again. It may have to do with just getting bored with one style so that something completely different looks unusual and therefore appealing - just by virtue of its being different.
It´s like facial hair on men. Early 19th century men would shave, beards were definitely not in fashion. Then around mid century they suddenly were. This is easiest seen in photos of famous people like Lincoln for instance. He started his career in politics clean shaven (as far as was possible of course) and ended up with an icon of a beard.
Back in the late 1960´s and early ´70´s, the Earth Mother thing was big as looks went, everything had to be natural, don´t shave anywhere, not even armpits. At the same time porn became more readily available and I have a sneaking suspicion that some of the models were just a bit over the top when it came to natural hairiness. So then enter reaction to all that hair and we end up with trimmed and shaved. And in years from now I am certain people will find reasons why shaved is unnatural and an affront to who knows who or what and then it will be back to hairy times most likely.
Though for all of the above, I have to say that body hair, facial, chest, pubic, legs and so on is an awful turn-off personally. It just looks so unsightly, in such contrast with skin tone and texture, so unruly and often unhygienic that I just cannot ever see myself changing opinion.
I´m a bit disappointed that pubic shaving was not the custom when I was younger. Sex would have been that much more enjoyable (oral sex most certainly - getting hairs out of your mouth afterwards without being seen was a real exercise in politeness),
Erotic photography and all the related things as well would have been that more enjoyable and aesthetically pleasing.
