For the group physicals in the school gym that I discussed below, I had several of those from 7th grade to 12th grade so my memory of any one exam is not that strong. The first time in 7th grade I can remember being nervous about being sent into the gym after my dad checked me in at the table outside and that was probably true of the first few group exams for sports. That first time my dad walked into the gym with me. There was someone just inside the door to the gym who checked to see if I had the form that the people at the check-in table provided to each boy and then told me to go to the wall of the gym, find a number, strip to my underpants only, and leave my clothes there. Although I had heard about the undressing part before that Saturday, it was still a little embarrassing to walk into a gym where there were already lines of guys in their underpants waiting to be examined and guys undressing out in the open like that.
I did what I was told. Found an open spot along one of the walls and stripped down to my briefs. There was another adult standing there to direct us into the various lines. I had PE in that gym and played other sports like basketball and wrestling there so it was weird to be stripped down in there. Lots of kids in various lines and it seemed like there were lots of adults too what with the school staff, coaches, doctors and their staff, and some parents. Still, none of us would have questioned why we had to undress in front of so many people or refused to do it.
I don't remember the stations exactly, but remember that the first one always had the scale for weight checks. We stood in that line, got on the scale, and the person running that station wrote our weight on the form that we carried. The next one might have been the heart check. The doctor listened to our hearts twice. The first time was for our resting heart rate. The second time, we had to jump in place for a minute or something like that. Then our heart rate was checked again.
Our lungs were checked at another station or maybe it was the same one as the heart rate check. There was a station for posture or spine checks where I remember being told to pull my shorts halfway down my rear, then bend over and touch my toes.
Eventually, I got in the line for the hernia check and everyone in line got to watch as each guy step up to a doctor who was seated on a stool. The doctor would tell the boy to drop his shorts to his ankles while the doctor had him cough while the doctor put a finger up into our scrotum. I remember that some of the doctors really put their finger pretty far up into our sack, which hurt and left me sore for a few hours, while other doctors just put their fingers up under our balls and had us cough once on each side (this was something that we guys talked about before and after these group physicals since both methods were embarrassing but one was a lot more uncomfortable than the other). Then the doctor would tell me to pull my briefs up, checked my form off, and told me that I could check out at another table.
If my form was completely checked off at all the stations, then I walked to the check-out table where my form was looked at and turned in. Usually, it was one of the coaches sitting there and he would tell the boys to find their clothes and get dressed. After dressing, I would go outside and hang out with the other boys who had just finished their physicals and were waiting for their parents. My dad was there waiting sometimes, although sometimes he dropped me off and my mom picked me up. It was awkward if some of the moms were hanging around waiting on their sons, especially when some of those moms came into the gym looking for their kid or to just to watch their kid get his physical.
When I got to high school, the guys joked around more about the physicals than we did in junior high, but none of us thought that they were fun.
