I find silicone plugs most comfortable for long term use (have one in most of the time), but in time they get horribly stinking. After all, they're put in smelly places... The odors do not permeate the silicone, but they stick to it. A bit like limescale on bath tubes or green color on your tea cup at work... and can be as though to remove, too..
I've tried all sorts of things to get the stink off my plugs: degreaser, limescale removers, window cleaner, dishwasher, boiling (yes, platinum silicone can endure pretty much everything unscratched), but none of these washed off the stink completely, some just change it (boiling, dishwasher) or make it even worse (degreaser).
Fortunately, you won't need fancy chemicals, you already have in your home everything you'll need .
Here's my "destinking" procedure:
- wash the plug with soap and water, dry it
- smear a few drops of oil (coconut, vegetable, sunflower, olive, whichever) all over the plug. No need to overdo it to avoid oil dripping, just smear it properly and evenly all over the plug. Put the plug on a paper towel (some oil may drip off the plug) and leave it standing for about an hour. After that scrub it thoroughly with a paper towel or cotton pads (the ones that girls use for makeup removal). You'll be amazed at what comes off (didn't I wash it before?).
- wash it again with soap to remove the oil, dry it
- scrub it thoroughly with alcohol (ethanol at 70% or more) and rinse, or
- instead of alcohol you may use some kitchen salt in your palm with a sip of vinegar and scrub the plug with that. Vinegar is a really effective smell remover. Or
- lemon juice is even better.
- rinse and dry the plug after, of course.
Now you should have a plug that is pretty much smell free. If it still smells, you can repeat the procedure, or do a part of it twice (i.e. oiling and scrubbing until there is no coloring on the towel).
If you find some other product or procedure (or modification of the above) that works even better, please do share. If you use steel or glass toys, I guess you are just amused by the chores we do to stuff our butts with silicone.
Things I didn't try (don't have at hand or seem impractical to me) are:
- commercial sex toy cleaners
- bleaching
- baby cleaning towels (I heard these are quite effective, but I would need a good excuse why I have them around).
I did not try the procedure above on toys made of jelly, TPR, PVC, superskin, silagel or the likes. You may ruin your toys applying it on them. Anyhow, none of these are really suitable for longer wearing, so you should get yourself a proper silicone toy.
Happy plugging to everyone!
