Examinations in Spain

In a few years my wife and I will be moving to Spain. As new residents i suppose we will have to register at the local district doctor in order to have access to the national health insurance system.

Being new residents, i am somewhat curious if anyone else, particularly anyone from Britain, has any experience of how this is done. I'm not asking about any administrative matters of course, that is of little interest. But I wonder if anyone has anything to tell about how doctors may possibly deal with new patients.Would new patients for instance be given a more or less complete examination on a first consult, or be required to have an examination on general principle, being new patients?

I have been thinking and admittedly fantasizing how this might well work out. The district medical center where we will be registered has a male and female doctor that I know of. It is not a very densely populated area at all.

Still, I don't wish to get any exaggerated ideas about exams in Spain nor to get my hopes up. But still, I would like to hear about any experiences members might have to tell.
