Mine was only recently when I turned 40. I had a physical at 30 and since insurance covers it now I got one at 40 too. I knew it was part of the routine after 40 but it wasn't mentioned at all in the pre-visit instructions.
I usually see a female PAC and that's who I got that day. We'd done all the blood and heart (shirt still on but unbuttoned) and eyes and reflex and what not and I figured the turn and cough was all that was left.
The PAC , as I was buttoning my shirt, said rather apologetically"Flatwater I'm going to have to do a prostate check."
"OK, I kind of figured."
"We'll just do that along with the hernia check." And with that she opened drawer and pulled out a paper sheet which she put on the table.
"I'm going to step out for a bit and get the nurse, I'll need you to take off your pants and underwear. You can use the sheet to cover yourself. I'll be back in a moment."
I went ahead and got undressed and sat back on the table with my shirt on and the sheet on my lap. I thought that maybe just maybe I had a little bit of the feeling that gals get waiting on the Dr. to return for a pelvic. After about 90 seconds or so there was a knock and she came back in with a nurse in tow.
"OK if you're ready go ahead and stand up and we'll check for hernia."
I'm standing there awkwardly trying to hold the sheet open in front and it's falling down and I'm fidgeting.
"Uh, do I need to have this sheet? Do you mind if I just get rid of it."
She didn't mind so I pulled it off to my right and draped it on the table. The PAC started inspecting my scrotum. Behind her I can see the nurse has gone from setting things out on the counter to squeezing what I now know was Surgilube onto a towel.
We wrapped up the turn and cough portion.
"OK are you ready for the prostate?"
"I guess so. What do I need to do? I've never had one of these before."
I see the nurse offer the towel of goop to the PAC as she swapping gloves.
"Just lean over the table, we'll be done in just a second."
I turned to lean over but the stool/bottom draw was out and I couldn't get very close to the table. I decided to try with a foot on either side of it. My heart was racing a bit and I wasn't sure if I need to bend at the waist, lean on my elbows, my hands or what.
"Uh is this good? Do I need to.."
She intrrupted me.
"You'll feel my finger" and though I thought I wasn't in position yet I felt a hand just below my back. "and then I'll to ask you to bear down like you're having a bowel movement."
With that there was a finger pressing against my sphincter.
"Bear down now. You'll feel some pressure for just a bit."
I was still trying to figure out how to lean on the table and in she went. I was so surprised that by the time I figured out she was in she was done.
"All done, everything's fine. G'head and get dressed and I'll be right back."
When I turned the nurse was putting things away (stool sample?) and the PAC was out the door.
That was it. Quicker than I expected and done before I noticed it.
