I have kind of run out of things to say on the forum, so I have been asking my family for more of their experiences and I got this great one from my sister-in-law. The story involves her husband (my brother)and their nieces.
My sister-in-law (who is, by the way, an incredibly straight, church-going Lutheran woman) went with her own sister to the doctor with five of their kids—all girls. Mostly these were yearly soccer and dance class physicals although one of my sister-in-law's nieces is diabetic and needed regular check-ups to monitor her insulin treatment. The whole visit was kind of a hassle because my sister-in-law had to deal with scheduling for her own 2 girls and 2 of her nieces while her sister was going with the oldest niece to the more critical diabetic checkup.
The medical practice was full and the girls were seeing different doctors in different rooms (actually in different wings) of the practice. She couldn’t even manage to keep the times and rooms straight. The appointments secretary was keeping a separate scheduling board in an effort to help my her. My sister-in-law called my brother to come in and give some support. He’s a lawyer, but he dropped everything and drove over to the doctors’ office (in a small town that was only a 3 minute drive or so).
He runs in, asks where his wife and the girls are and gets sent back to the exam rooms where his wife, his daughter and his nieces are getting their exams. He is shown into the room with his nieces, but nobody seems real sure where my sister-in-law and their own daughters are.
He waits, talking with the nieces, with no real possibility of wandering around finding his own family. He figures that everybody will get together shortly.
While he is there a female doctor walks in, asks my brother if he is with the two girls, and then instructs them to undress. My brother, who had answered that he is with the girls, doesn’t know quite what to do and tells the doctor that he is the girls’ uncle. The doctor makes no response other than starting to ask the girls routine health questions and telling them to take off their pants and tops. The doctor’s authoritative manner and her stream of questions keep the girls from doing anything other than proceeding with the exam.
My brother won't talk, but my sister-in-law tells me she arrived somewhat later to find her husband looking on with interest as a female doctor is giving one stark naked niece a spinal check and the other one is sitting in her underpants chatting away about a recovered ankle sprain.
My sister-in-law says no one seemed embarrassed except her, and she was too surprised to ask any questions at the time. The story has become a family standard for holidays and such, but, as I say, my brother and his nieces have never given anybody any of the details beyond what I have told you.
