Rectal Ultrasound

If you've had a rectal ultrasound:

1. What prep was involved? Was it done at home or at the office?

2. What exactly were you wearing/not wearing during the exam?

3. How exactly were you positioned?

4. What happened? What was it like? How did it feel physically & emotionally?

5. Did you clean up or were you cleaned up of the gel after?

Had one done about 5 years ago. My doctor sent me to a urologist as I wasn't completely draining my bladder when urinating. I had a trans-rectal ultrasound done to check the size of my prostate which was a suspected cause, but asit turned out it was simply being caused by one of the meds I was taking causing my bladder to spasm mildly, thus not completely voiding my bladder when urinating.

I must say it was a fairly unpleasant experience, not because it was a giant or sharp probe, but the lady performing was a complete cluster-fuck! She started jamming the probe about a full inch above my anus, and when I yelled out "ouch, that hurts" she said just relax. I then told her that my anus was about an inch lower that where she was pushing, and to spend a second or two "AIMING" for the existing hole instead of trying to make a new one. She then repositioned the probe and it slid right in. After she was done she had a bad attitude and just gave me a box of tissues and said "here, clean yourself up with these" in a very snotty manner. I told her she was a hack,a nd for such a simple job as putting a thin instrument into an existing orifice she was useless, it wasn't exactly rocket science. She stormed out of the room without saying a word. I told the doctor who reviewed the results that his ultrasound tech was not only unqualified to perform her duty correctly, she was a bitch as well. He laughed and said he was sorry, but had not received any complaints about her before. I definitely could not beleive that!

Sorry you had such a bad experience, having a friendly and knowledgable professional makes procedures so much more "enjoyable"

Why would a rectal ultrasound be needed?

I think that ultrasoud exam are not very good!!

If the doc didn't fire the nurse, You should find a new doc.

I had one done as part of a prostate biopsy a year ago and they never told me about any prep its a good thing I had my wife give me a big enema at home before I went. I wore my clothes with my pants and underwear pulled down to my knees I had to lay on my left side with my knees bent the tech doing it was a nice looking older female and I joked with her saying 'now i can tell all my friends I got a torpedo stuck up my ass by a nice looking lady' she laughed they even put a condom on the probe in case they hit any poop. They greased it up, put some gel on my asshole first and shoved it home and she held it there for about 20 minutes while the Dr fired off the needles. Being anally erotic I thought I had died and gone to heaven, even had an erection that hey didnt see when it was over they wiped me up good with paper towels and gave me a couple to put in my underwear because my ass was bleeding from the biopsy. I looked in the bucket on the way out and the towels were soaked with blood. I had another one done in prep for prostate seed implants the nurse and Dr were in the room and he greased his finger and stuck it in my as turning it round and round they put me on a table with my legs in stirrups and covered my private areas the probe was hooked up to a machine that slowly inserti it little by little inside you. When I was laying there I told the nurse 'well, this is about as erotic as its gonna get for me today ha' she said well I dont know what you do at home.

A rectal ultrasound is done when you have a prostate biopsy done so the dr. can see where to remove a core sample of the prostate of which they usually take 12 to 16 samples to check for cancer. Both of my ultrasounds were done after a lot of numbing gel was put up my rear and was also put up my penis, this helped a lot when the ultrasound probe was inserted but you know everytime the needle was snapped into prostate for a core sample.

Are there other occasions when a rectal ultrasound is employed? Having a biopsy needle "snapped" into my prostate a dozen times doesn't really sound like a lot of fun. The ultrasound on the other hand sounds interesting.

I just underwent a prostate biopsy procedure yesterday morning. I was told to undress from the waist down and then reclined on the exam table with a paper sheet over me. A nurse came in, took my blood pressure, and then had me turn on my left side. At that point she told me she was going to insert some Lidocaine gel in my rectum to help numb the rectal wall near the prostate. I couldn't see what the gel was in exactly being turned away from her, but I surmise it was in some form of a suppository form as it held its shape for awhile before seeming to melt. The nurse left to get the doctor and give the numbing gel time to work. I should add, I performed a series of enemas the previous night to help clean out my rectum and, with some castile soap in one, try to knock down the bacteria count a little as the biopsy needle pierces the rectal wall first before hitting your prostate. I also started on an antibiotic one hour before the procedure.

The doctor and nurse returned about ten minutes later and the doctor got right to work with the ultrasound probe which appeared to be about an inch in diameter and covered with a condom. The probe slid right in and the doctor announced he was going to get some ultrasound pictures of the prostate prior to the biopsy. Just prior to starting the actual biopsy, the doctor cautioned about the clicking that would signal the needle was in-bound and to not be alarmed.

Surprisingly, the click was not alarming and the actual needle going into the prostate was not as painful as I have been led to believe. It was more a feeling of something is disturbing my prostate, only this went on for another nine times just as fast as the doctor could re-load the probe. He was probably done in under three minutes total. The doctor commented the procedure went very well and did not have much bleeding. He said the pathology results would take one to two weeks and that he would call with the diagnosis.

The nurse then provided some pads I could use in my underwear if I so chose; I cleaned myself up with several towels after the nurse left. My prostate was not in pain, but it knew it had been disturbed. Sitting down was not painful afterwards and the drive home was uneventful. Once home, I had an urge to empty my bowels and left a small amount of blood in the toilet bowl. I did not have any signs of blood in my urine until the afternoon, but only a tinge during the very first part of unrination. The blood in the urine is normal for a day or two according to the doctor. I had my first bowel movement this afternoon and it appeared blood-free. I had another antibiotic this morning and complete them tomorrow.

I had a transracial ultrasound of my prostate but no biopsy. There was no special prep. I was stripped from the waiste down and wearing a gown. The test was done while I was laying on my side. The probe was lubricated and insertion felt pretty much like a DRE except no moving around. It was over in a few minutes and nurse cleaned me up since the ultrasound was followed by a cystoscope.

When I was 13 I was sent to hospital because of blood in my urine. It was estimated that I might suffer from a prostatitis. Interestingly my symptoms were not that typical for a prostatitis so further diagnostics were done in these two weeks. An ultrasound was done 5 times.

One hour before a nurse brought a bottle of fluid with a tube on it (bit more than 100 ml) and pushed it in my bum. After that little enema which always caused sort of tickling in my body , I went to toilet. Afterwards I was sent to the diagnosis room down the floor, and normally I needn't to wait longer than 10 minutes.

2. What exactly were you wearing/not wearing during the exam?

At hospital I wore sweatpants and boxer shorts below. During examination I only lowered my pants and shorts to bare my bum.

3. How exactly were you positioned?

I laid on my left side, my upper/right leg was bent. My impression was that the examination couch was positioned head down hips up a bit.

4. What happened? What was it like? How did it feel physically & emotionally?

Before I laid down I saw the stick next to the ultrasound machine most times was prepared with a sort of condom. The other times I could hear the sound when that condom was rolled over that stick. The next sound was a click from the gel bottle and the squishing sound. Then my right cheek was pulled up widely and I felt the cold air touching my crack. Then came the slimy big bulb of that stick that was pushed in my small bum hole quickly. The first times another person had to hold me down that I cannot stand up, while I mozned all the time . The third or fourth time I only wailed while the insertion. It felt really weird having that stick inside, pushed around, twisted and turned, came out and reinserted, moving back and forth and back and deep. First times it hurt badly, so was my impression, because the largest thing inside my bum was the thermometer, but I could handle it the more it was repeated.

Afterwards I should roll over on my stomach to get the ultrasound examination of my kidneys, which was quite painless, and at least I had to turn on my back for the ultrasound of my belly.

5. Did you clean up or were you cleaned up of the gel after?

Interestingly my back and belly were rubbed with some tissues, but at every time, it still felt wet.My bum stayed slimy, and I was told to get dressed and sit on the examination couch, because they showed me the pictures and told me what will happen to me furthermore. It felt strange st my bum, and when I stood up and left the room, for sure the others in the waiting area, at hospital and so on only had to have a look at my bum in my sweatpants and could see what happened to me.

Same after getting rectal temperature measuring, there was no whipping afterwards.

Too bad, that I only had 2 sweatpants there, which showed the wet spot, wherever I was in the hospital, at cafeteria with my friends or parents, and so on.

Yes, thx. As a teen I suffered from different illnesses but they were solved luckily, so that I now have no further complications.
