Going to a New Doctor

I graduated college a few years ago and accepted an employment offer in a new city. Establishing a relationship with a new doctor was a little challenging because I suffer moderate asthma. I am also physically active so I need some guidance regarding exercise and asthma. I went to my HMO (Hand Money Over) website and found what I thought I would be a good match based upon this doctor's credentials. During my early childhood I was mishandled by my share of medical professionals which has carried over into adulthood. When I was 11 I started getting treated by a wonderful pediatrician who helped me improve my physical, psychological and emotional well being.

I am now relatively stable regarding interactions with medical professionals. Regretfully the doctor I chose as my PCP was less than stellar. I found the doctor to be crass and disrespectful. After my first physical I was lectured to about managing my condition. I have heard all his suggestions before from other providers and he offered nothing new or insightful. I gave him a year then moved on.

If it is for something routine, then yes, seeing a new provider is something exciting - especiall if the provider is female. Thoughts about how the appointment will go occupy my thoughts for days/weeks before, my heart feels like it is racing as I wait in the exam room - and frequently the nurse will comment that my pulse is a little elevated. I usually make some joke or excuse about being a little nervous and they always say that they'll take it again at the end of the appointment. Unfortunately (but not always) the actual experience is anticlimactic.
