I hope your biopsy goes better than my experiences. I’ve had three of them. On the first one, everything went fairly well. In fact, it was actually “enjoyable”. After your enema clears you out, the urologist will insert a rectal probe up your butt and explore around taking ultra sound images of your prostate. He will also measure it, size wise, via ultrasound. This procedure actually felt pretty good as he moved the probe “in and out” and around inside my butthole. Then, he very slowly injected two large syringes with long needles, one on either side of my hole to numb the area. He waited a few minutes then said he was going to retrieve 12 tissue samples from my prostate. He then reinserted the anal probe, which was probably 5 or 6 inches in length and about the diameter of a quarter. He then shot 12 needles, one at a time, into my prostate through my rectal wall to retrieve a tissue sample. The first needle was a bit painful, probably because the novocaine had not taken full effect. The remaining 11 tissue retrievals were much less painful. I did have traces of cancer, but the doctor said we should wait a year and do ANOTHER biopsy to see how aggressive the cancer was. So...a year later we repeated the process (enema, rectal insertion, etc.), but this time, for some reason, the novocaine must not have worked. Each of the 12 shots from the probe were excruciatingly painful. This time, a year later, my cancer was found to have spread a bit writhin the prostate, so it was decided I needed to have radiation treatments. This necessitated another very painful rectal probing, this time to inject 6 gold markers into the prostate. These markers help the radiologist/oncologist to “zero in” the radiation on the prostate to zap cancer cells. Now, nearly 2 years later, my PSA is 0.0 (ZERO point ZERO). I hope it stays like that!
Anyway, I hope all goes well for you and you get properly numbed for your procedure.
