I'm an MD doctor and anesthesiologist in real life, so I have been using lidocaine extensively for many reasons for about 25+ years. I see lots of RED FLAGS on this thread about complications of lidocaine or other local anesthetic (there are many) use in sexual play. A red flag is a serious concern or WARNING about something. The bottom line is, STOP playing around with complex and potentially fatal drugs for sexual play unless you're a doctor and really know what you're doing, or perhaps a graduate level Nurse with a hell of a lot of both medical as well as anesthetic experience. NO sexual gratification, no matter how fabulous or relationship-bonding, is worth finding someone with severe ischemic tissue damage (skin falling off, etc.), a cardiac arrhythmia, permanent nerve damage or dead. I'll just tic off a few red flags I've already seen actually written in this thread:
Post #1: it's normal for lidocaine to take a few minutes to reach peak numbing effectiveness. Almost nothing in medicine is instantaneous except extremely fast acting IV drugs like anesthetics and even those must be measured in seconds and minutes. Poster #1 is correct - since it's not instant, the actual drug STINGS pretty badly for at least a few seconds before its numbing effect starts which also numbs the stinging from the drug injection. There are some ways to make it sting less, but not perfectly and I won't discuss it here.
#2: Interesting but bizarre notion. I have NEVER had a patient, child or adult, have ear tubes placed with lidocaine. They're all done with ultra-fast acting anesthetic gases. And this includes newborns to seniors. I'd like to know who (and why) is practicing like that.
#3 and others: it sounds like these practitioners either don't understand what's called the pharmacodynamics and pharmacokinetics of lidocaine, or they just don't care. No one should be cutting anyone immediately after putting down the lidocaine injection syringe - it may occasionally work by luck but not reliably, and I'd ask for my money back or a new surgeon. I would suggest it is a mild form of malpractice. And for ladydocisin in #4, she already knows that local anesthetic injections into infected or acidotic or ischemic tissues work poorly if at all, and your pilonidal cyst tissue may have been unusual enough that it took even longer than in normal skin. If they were shocked, I'm shocked at their incompetence or lack of experience or caring for your welfare. Another money back or new surgeon.
#5: agree with Susie about dentists. Many are better anesthetists than surgeons are.
#6: being fascinated by epidural anesthesia (which is a standard but remarkable technique) is fine. I'm fascinated by epidurals and spinals too, but I do them EVERY DAY almost, especially for labor pain. For our members, DON'T even think about it. It can be rapidly fatal. No fun, eh?
#7: don't even think about getting anything including lidocaine that's stolen, pilfered or bought by anyone but a medical professional. It comes in many forms in the legal, licensed versions, and they all act differently, especially if they have other drugs mixed in like epinephrine (very common and useful).
#8: Stephen is right on both counts. Don't.
#10: Michael Jackson undoubtedly died from misuse of a complex poorly-documented group of powerful anesthetic drugs including propofol which is one of the best, safest, most useful drugs we use in anesthesia. We know what we're doing. The cardiologist had no clue or didn't care.
#11: What are you talking about, please?
#12: same question as for 11.
#13: Largely but not strictly correct on some things. What on Earth are you giving yourself radial, ulnar and median nerve blocks for????
#14: Eunuch........, The answer to your question is YES, BUT DON'T even THINK about trying it. Go see a urologist and ask them the method, advisability and RISK of making your penis numb for playtime/orgasm delay. You might be referred to a psychiatric consult for your own safety. I don't mean to be rude, but DON'T. I guess the kids today would say "I can't even" or the like. Prize your penis and jewels and play nice without drugs.
#15: Smart, compassionate doctor and nurse you have. Good choice!
#16: there is also a real risk of lidocaine overdose during liposuction, so you need a HIGHLY experienced surgeon, not some dude or gal that just came back from their "Massive Profit Center in Local Anesthetic Anesthesia for Liposuction" course. Apologies to those liposuction docs who know their anatomy/physiology and local anesthetic behavior.
Sorry this went on so long, but this is what I do professionally and I'd really not like to hear or read in lurid newspaper articles or here that we've lost someone while playing. We have such an array of intense and rewarding things we can do for each other for playing or loving that no one needs to ruin it with these drugs. Replies or PM's accepted.
