Suppositories and Vaseline

Normally, the Glycerine ones just need dipping in water, and they are slippery enough to go up without difficulty. You may need a bit of water based lube for your finger though.

The few suppositories I recall receiving as a child were not additionally lubricated. Those long thin ones in the glass jar were plenty greasy and were inserted by mom quite quickly and without any drama. Vaseline was used to lubricate the enema nozzle. I can picture mom holding the black nozzle shiny with a generous coating of Vaseline…..

In our home, Vaseline was the go-to. I was given my temperature with it, enemas with it and suppositories as well. I believe KY or similar was used at my pediatrician, as clean-up was easier

The suppositories that produce carbon dioxide, (the ones you dip in water before you insert), such as Ceo-Two brand specifically say: Do Not Lubricate with mineral oil or petrolatum (vaseline) prior to rectal insertion. These suppositories “do their job”, but I have found them to be of a very rough scratchy texture when inserting them. It's no wonder that people might attempt to use vaseline on them. I think the Vaseline would inhibit the “sodium bicarbonate” from bubbling up inside your rectum, which causes you to evacuate. The other ingredient is potassium bitartrate.

Looking back, I remember the suppository was lubricated with Vaseline which I have read prevents the suppository from melting properly. Has anyone heard of this?

I think they meant to say it prevents the suppository from being absorbed properly. Vaseline contains petroleum jelly to lock in moisture….it's the same stuff found in the diaper cream we put on babies' bottoms to form a protective barrier. The barrier will reduce absorption of the suppository in the rectum.

It depends on the suppository ‘base’.

Suppositories are made of a base material (usually the largest part of the suppository) and an ‘active ingredient’ the stuff that makes you poo. Bases are either water soluble or waxy/greasy.

Water soluble suppositories, like the Magic Bullets, work poorly if lubricated with Vaseline because the grease film stops them from dissolving and releasing the laxative agent.

If the suppository is waxy/grease based, like the ordinary Dulcolax, the Vaseline won't have any effect, except that they go in easier if lubed. These melt, rather than dissolve.

As a fraternity stunt, two of us swam across the Mississippi in April in Minnesota. Stilll had ice floating in the water. Greased up with axel grease, petroleum based, to hold our body heat. Maybe it helped, but I was numb when I got out, plus it doesn’t wash off! Dumb idea!

Not dumb at all. The stinky axle grease saved your life. The alligators couldn't bear to take a bite out of you two.

A tiny dab of Vaseline to lubricate the tip of the suppository wouldn’t keep it from melting. I have used Vaseline when taking Phenergan rectally for nausea and stomach flu, and from experience there’s no problem with the medication working. I can feel it within a few minutes. The same for acetaminophen (Tylenol) suppositories for fever when I couldn’t take oral meds. You wouldn’t lube the entire suppository, anyway, just takes a little to help going in. Hospital nurses used Surgilube, though. Doubtful they use Vaseline.

When occasionally using ginger I will dip it in water before inserting it. Vaseline would dull the effect. I think for medical type suppositories that water would be better than Vaseline for the same reason. You can start with a wet finger and the bullet will go right in.

Ky jelly is used at the hospital! Open the suppository and get your patient positioned and put very little of the end in the KY and suppository and gloved finger goes up your rear!

As Vaseline isn't water soluble it may inhibit it dissolving. But if you got relief from the the suppository it did work. The Vaseline “melted” and let the suppository do it's thing.

I see it slightly different than most of you. Any lubricant that works well is the right one for you to use. Here at my house it was aways Vaseline and still is. The old saying goes if it goes in, it will come out! So no real reason to be overly concerned!😁Have a wonderful day my friends

Ahhh, another ancient thread given new life! In my family, and I still put the Vaseline on a finger and spread it/insert it in & aound the anus. It goes in easily, and very little Vaseline gets on the suppository. I've never had a problem with the suppo working.
