But I think something is wrong when a lot of women have started wanting men to look androgynous.
I do not think I could be as turned on by a boyish man who looked like he had not started growing pubic hair yet.
A premise to ponder about: androgynous is just another roundabout way to say people are becoming more equal as male and female in the way they look ...
Social customs vary as do fashions ... it could very well become the common custom to think that body hair is unsightly and maybe regressive, evolutionary-wise. One could just as well say that a man who doesn't shave, isn't properly grooming himself. None of these reasons are valid in and of themselves though. Not that people think those reasons up first and then apply them. Of course not. It is usually that a custom is appreciated for other reasons and then people go look for and think up rationalizations and justifications. They think up excuses why they like this or that.
Besides being a fashion custom that is known to have fluctuated between cultures and time periods all through history - probably a lot due to a novelty factor - another unstated reason for (male) pubic shaving in my unsubstantiated opinion, is because of the blurring of gender lines and the growing equality between males and females (at least in Western societies). The more equal rights and status both genders accrue through social, legal and economic means, the more blurred will become the differences in many areas. Hence an androgynous look becoming more common. Not only with both genders shaving more and more, but also with for instance hair styles and clothing looking more and more similar. Short hair on ladies is nothing unusual anymore. In Europe even more so than in the US, with its tradition of Dolly Parton looks in some parts of the country ... ha ha.
In science fiction it has often been a theme that males and females grow more and alike in looks and status in the future. They are often portrayed as hairless, bald as well, which accentuates the equality even more. It's just sci-fi of course, but it is still interesting to note that common assumption about the future.
There is little use in thinking up rational (or emotional) reasons why pubic hair should be shaven or not. People either like it or not or it becomes a socially driven fashion choice because of deeper reasons like growing gender equality. Sort of like the growing awareness and acceptance of pegging. If females can assume the dominant (male), penetrative role in sexual coupling, then why not have males look more the submissive role? The logic is obvious and compelling and I think pretty straightforward.
