So we've been talking about conditioning in my psych class. It got me wondering if this is why diapers turn us on. I thought about it for a few minutes and came up with this:
When we are little kids, our minds can be easily molded. *VERY* easily molded. We can be taught anything (see Skinner experiments). Well, because we learn 24/7, it makes me think that diaper fetishes are basically learned.
We all have stimuli that cause us to do things unconditionally. For example, if there is a really, really loud and unexpected noise, chances are your body will automatically close your eyes for half of a second and your heart rate will increase.
There are things in this world that, normally, have zero effect on us (based upon what it is). For example, if I were to present a baseball to someone, they would be like hey, that's just a baseball. If that baseball exploded every time they got near one, they'd be afraid of baseballs. Thus, that stimulus that normally had no effect became a fear. Maybe diapers work the same way. I'll use myself as an example.
Sexual contact or sexual touch is a stimulus requiring no learning. My response to that would to be sexually aroused. Diapers were just something that I ended up wearing. It did not mean anything to me whatsoever way back when I was a little kid. It was just an object. Sexual pressure came from the diaper due to its softness, thickness, and tightness. When I wore diapers, I found that diapers gave sexual feeling. Thus, after years upon years upon years of diapering, I began to associate diapers with a good sexual feeling. Boom: sexual fetish for diapers. The neutral object that meant nothing became associated with a primitive response. I think that explains it the best for me.
What a great class - I get to learn about why weird crap happens with me!
