Oh gosh, YES. I was raised in what one might call a rural "village." A "valley" area with several small farms, and a few small businesses. The "moms" were mostly stay at home farm wives. For entertainment, they often would meet, have a coffee klatch, or play cards together. Children were OFTEN the main topic of conversation.
It wasn't uncommon for the ladies to babysit each other's kids, so they knew us well. Nothing was sacred for long. As one example of how this village worked: If I was visiting a neighbor kid, or being babysat, getting caught doing some bad behavior, the spanking wasn't going to wait for my Mother. LOL.
"I had to give "Walter" an enema last night. He was acting out of sorts. Doctors were 25 miles away, and expensive. An enema was a good thing to try first.
Nobody locked their doors. A neighbor might need to borrow something while you were out. This actually happened to me. Mother's best friend was "Patricia." She rarely knocked, just walked in the house. "Are you here, ( my Mom's name said.) When we were thoought to be alone, the bathroom dorr was likely left open. "Oh Hi Patricia, I am in the bathroom. Pour yourself a cup of coffee. I am giving Walter an enema." Well folks, our bathroom was a converted pantry, just off the kitchen where the coffee was!! Mule Walt
