My favourite long wear plug is different from what most recommend. Mind you I only wear it while sleeping and I only use water based lube on my silicone plug. There are a few things I’ve discovered over the years that have helped me
1. I always warm up the plug to body temperature in some hot water. This is just one of the procedures I take to protect the delicate tissue around my anus. Remember any trauma to that area will impact your comfort level.
2. I use a lube shooter to ensure that there is plenty of lube not only at the external sphincter but also the internal one.
3. The lube can leak and make a bit of mess, and I’m quite self conscious about that, so I have found wearing an adult incontinence diaper helps me sleep better. The plug I like to use will touch my prostate has I move in my sleep which causes me to leak precum, the diaper helps keep that from my sheets as well. I’ve also discovered if I buy the female small size it keeps the plug from falling out in my sleep. I’m not normally turned on by diapers, but I find the small size holds everything nice and tight and that enhances the experience.
4. The plug that I have found to be most comfortable is the one shown as my avatar. Many people say the neck (the thin part) should be very narrow. I find that a narrow neck tends to press on a small area making a sore spot. I personally like the large flange, I’ve tried “T-flanges” and while in theory it should be more comfortable as is sits between your butt cheeks. I’ve found that they also cause sore spots. Also that flange feels amazing when I’m sitting. The last feature that works well for my anatomy is the long neck, I find with a short neck it becomes uncomfortable faster. Perhaps it’s because the long neck allows the bulb to sit completely inside past the sphincter.
5. Go slow during insertion. Sometimes it takes longer to get it in, but I never rush. Some people have said you should expect a little discomfort when it goes in. I don’t agree with this, especially for long wear. If it hurts to insert, then I have already strained the delicate tissue around my sphincter. This means I’m starting with a disadvantage.
6. When I remove the plug in the morning, I do it while seated on the toilet. I don’t push or at least push very gently and allow the weight of the plug to drop by itself. This can take several minutes of relaxation.
7. I don’t think there is any doubt that wearing a plug over night is a bit of a strain on the system, even though I wake up feeling great. So as a precaution I always apply a bit of Preparation H to the outside and about 1” inside my sphincter
Using my finger. This just promotes any healing that is necessary.
I think the longest on going use has been four nights in a row. For 8-10 hours each night. I stopped after four nights because my prostate was becoming overworked and giving me prostatitis symptoms. These symptoms disappeared after 36 hours on their own.
