What's your favorite laxative?

Miralax. Only used when necessary to clean out my small bowel for a colonoscopy preparation. Otherwise, I'll do as many enemas as necessary to clean my colon since I enjoy them so much.

I tried you suggestion. Thank you. Wonderful experience!!

Got to go refill a few more times. Have to make sure everything is out.

Maybe favorite is not the right choice of words. I don't LIKE laxatives, but I use them in their place.

probably my "default" laxative when I have any doubts about what laxative I should take it is usually oral bisacodyl.

I like the dulcolax suppositories.

They work fast and have good cramps.

At least for me they work great.

An enema

An enema

Great answer. I agree. Much more fun than waiting for a laxative to finally work.

Eric

Yep. Like you an enema is quick and sure, second choice is suppositories (bisacodyl or a mix of bisacodyl and glyerin). Don't know why LisaK chose oral bisacodyl, up the butt gives you a bit more control and speed.

No laxatives enemas only!

The poo that follows Dulcolax suppositories is often more difficult and not as thorough as the poo resulting from an oral dose. The oral dose tends to soften up the stool, especially if taken at bedtime as the urge builds more slowly overnight. Also, you don't feel the burning sensation, common with the suppositories.

If the suppositories are given to a badly constipated or impacted person, they can cause a lot of discomfort or even pain. Been there

Have noticed that too, didn't realize that there may be some benefits to oral (have seen plenty of the downsides - unpredictability, going on and on, cramping). Think I'll stick with enemas then.

Bisacodyl (Dulcolax) when taken orally will have to make it all through the system, and then propagate throughout the lower intestine starting at the top.

As a result, it IS slow, but highly effective.

Given by suppository it stays in the last foot or so of the large intestine

I do not like taking unknown chemicals into my body. With an enema, I know exactly what is going into me and it is almost always plain water with only seldom use of Ivory which I find has undesirable carry over effects. Plain water makes for very predictable clean out and other side benefits for me. Hence I do not use laxatives at all. Denise

There is an oral laxative, similar to Dulcolax, that is worth considering. It's Picolax Drops, essentially Dulcolax but in liquid form rather than coated pills.

Dulcolax pills are coated so they pass through your stomach without release of the active laxative. Hence they take roughly 6 hours to start working because there is a delay in the release of the active laxative med. I don't think Picolax Drops are available in the US, perhaps because the full dose of 10 - 20 drops is completely undetectable in a beverage.

Picolax Drops are chemically changed to the active form when it gets into your bowel. The drops can often start to produce an intense urge after a half hour.

Picolax is also combined with Magnesium Citrate in PicoPrep. A full dose of this combination will aggressively clean an adult out, starting in about 30 minutes. With this stuff, resistance is utterly futile.

Another laxative worth considering is Lactulose. This is a synthetic sugar that humans can't digest. It's a sweet syrup that can easily be added to orange juice or coffee and will start to work within an hour or so. You know it's starting to work when the person starts to fart a lot. A large, soft, very urgent poo will soon follow. If the warning is ignored, as by a withholder, the person will fill their pants very soon. For this reason it's often given to retrain withholders. It's by 'scrip I think. Lactulose is sometimes used asw a retention enema post-op to kick-start someone pooing after anesthesia. Given either orally or as an enema expect several poos.

Not a fan of laxatives. Too unpredictable in terms of onset. An enema is certain in its effect and timing.

Dulcolax suppositories. Effective in 30 minutes for me and gives a good cramps.Tried also tablets but dont like them, because it takes quite a long time until they works

Like others, half a year ago I buyed enema bag and almost stopped using laxatives

There is a little known condition called Fructose Intolerance:

"Fructose malabsorption, formerly called dietary fructose intolerance, occurs when cells on the surface of the intestines aren't able to break down fructose efficiently. Fructose is a simple sugar, known as a monosaccharide, that comes mostly from fruit and some vegetables."

and

"People who have fructose intolerance should limit high-fructose foods, such as juices, apples, grapes, watermelon, asparagus, peas and zucchini."

If you have Fructose issues, eating things like grapes will result in Fructose being carried into your bowel, and sugars in your bowel make you poo... rapidly and often with a lot of gas.

Sugars, natural or artificial, in your colon and you will poo.... soon. This is true of indigestible natural (Sorbitol, Fructose for some) or synthetic sugars like Lactulose. It works whether given by mouth or enema (Molasses, Mayo (sugar and soda), honey, etc)

My new favorite is a homemade super suppository that Lisa has been making. She melts 4 to 6 Dulcolax (generics) and adds enough coconut oil to fill one condom. She chills it back to solid in a jar of ice cold water, then stores it in the freezer until it's needed. When she wants to use it on me, she uses a large butt plug to loosen my anus, peels off the condom, and eases it into my rectum. I love the cold as it stretches my anus going in. It feels strange but good in my rectum as it melts. It doesn't take long, especially if she uses 6 Dulcolax, for the urge to purge to begin. I've never been able to hold one more that 45 minutes, and that with pretty strong cramps. Additionally, the coconut oil melts, carrying the laxative deeper into me, where it lubes the colon for a quick, huge BM. The downside is oily diarrhea for the next 4-8 hours, necessitating a diaper. She has overcome this by giving me several very soapy, VERY warm enemas. The first couple of enemas are really hard to take, because the laxative is still strong.

Not really a fan of laxatives; I prefer enemas by far. However as I recently discovered my lactose intolerance has progressed to the point that a few Starbucks latte's will more or less serve the function. Something about the steamed milk really sets me off nowadays apparently.

I love osmotic laxative, like peg solutions..

Moviprep or plenvu

A good dose of Epsom salt is a good punishment too..

If I need to destroy my inside I use senna or bisacodyle

@enemaluver513 lactose doesn't surprise me I use a medication daily that is derived from Lactose called Lactulose it is the most effective stool softening/bowel movement producing drug I have ever used,I have severe constipation ,I take Mirilax 1 X's a day & Lactulose 3X's a day , it doesn't allow me to be constipated ,I can stop taking it before I travel after about 3 days I am plugged up ,when I get home i can take it 2X's in larger dose 45 minutes apart it then retakes control of my bowels , I then resume my 3 X's a day dosing . It definately can not be used by lactose intolerant people for you it will be really aggressive, I am diapered normaly due to IC (neurogenic bladder & bowel).

I have never taken a laxative! I've tried suppositories but didn't like the burning/stinging sensation.

Then I tried Fleet enemas and didn't like the urgency.

So, now at the first sign of constipation I get out the enema equipment and and prepare a nice warm solution and take care of the problem in a warm, relaxing way.

When I was hospitalized a few years ago for a couple of week, Miralax and Colace worked well. I really wished for an enema, but no luck there...

As I stated in a prior post, a children's laxative that many of us were given, Castoria, definitely isn't my favorite if there is such a thing. Neither is milk of magnesia, Ex-Lax, Black ?? Something, a chewing gum laxative that started with a F, Epsom Salt solution, or Magnesium Citrate, all laxatives that my Mother tried giving me after my doctor told Mom to stop giving me enemas.

I do take Ducolax pills on occasion 12 or so hours prior to myself taking a large volume enema. Laxatives usually creates more problems than they are worth. My sister-in-law, who is a nurse, states laxatives whip a person's body into submission. Enemas do not do that. I

Personally, enemas always give me excellent relief plus a pleasant feeling afterwards.

I rather just do an enema and be done with it. Works alot faster to.

Enemas for me, don't like laxatives at all.

I also am not into oral laxatives. I see them as a wasted chance to take something rectally that has the same function but is way more enjoyable... :-)

The optimal manner to cleanse my intestines completely is the following one:

Early in the morning, not having breakfasted take 1 oz (= 30 ml) castor oil in your mouth and mix this there with your saliva for 15 to 20 minutes before swallowing this one. In this manner castor oil will lose its bad taste, its high viscosity and will no more irritate the mucosa of your stomach. One hour later repeat this procedure and you will be astonished upon the gentle beginning.

I just take one or two magnesium supplements very rarely. Take it at night and things are sorted out by the morning.

I'd have to say Fletcher's Castoria, as it reminds me of the many times I was given it as a boy.

@termor64

Although Castoria is sold as a children's laxative, it works very well, in the appropriate dosage, for adults, especially if stirred into a small glass of prune juice and taken a bedtime. It can't be ignored and reliably produces a complete poo, often before breakfast. It's Senna syrup and doesn't really soften, but sure pushes.
