What's your favorite laxative?

Apart from the Lubentyl solid paraffin oil, which I already mentioned (mom took the version without magnesia added), mom would give me glycerin suppositories. When one is inserted, you feel it until it's melted. Then, if you have no feces in your rectum, you may forget it, but when feces come down, the glycerin gives you a strong urge to expel. It was not so nice having to wait with my bowels churning until I could go expel.

@Pecan_nutjob

Lubentyl, w/o the Milk of Magnesia, is more of a internal grease than a laxative. I had a jar years ago, and remember the instructions said to spread the dose on a piece of toast and eat it. It was supposed to be easier to take, and better tasting, than liquid mineral oil. I think one had to take it for two or three days in a row to get any real effect and, even then, it didn't cause any real urge to poo. Basically, it softened the poo and lubed the passage, so when you pushed down, the softened poo came out more easily. I don't think it ever had a big market share.

Glycerin suppositories are really to give someone a little help if they are mildly constipated. They work best if a person has not pood for about two or three days and their rectum is packed with firm, but not really hard, poo. If the person is really hard, glycerine suppositories probably won't work, or if they do, it will be a real strain to go. If there isn't lot of poo in the person's rectum, there isn't really any reason to give a suppository. All it does is irritate and that produces a lot of mucous.

The other thing that made phenolphthalein the choice in it's day was that the regular strength was 30mg and the “extra Strength” was 45mg.

That meant that 3 regular strength were the same amount as 2 regular strength. This really simplifies the dosing.

Bisacodyl ONLY ever comes in 5mg tablets, or 10 mg suppositories and mini enemas.

Cheap beer.

Other than drinking coffee (which helps my bowels), I like glycerin suppositories. But I rely much more on the coffee.

I see that everyone has his personal favorite laxative, but everyone is not everybody for everyone has his body.

@complete_bowel_cleansing you are correct. What works for one may not work for others. Suggesting something helps to give options to try.

Cheap beer.

Actually any beer works. I think it is the amount of fluids but I always have a good move the morning after a night of pounding them. TGIF!

Drinking home brewed ales and use of Garden of Life Raw Organic Fiber with its 15 organic superfoods causes my colon to dance the light fantastic on a daily basis.

This sentence will be correct too. In order to move the bowels by taking castor oil:

- The gall bladder should be present this with no gallstones.

- You should not take any antihistamines.

I like castor oil and Ex/Lax and a number of laxatives expect for MoM and the citrus mag junk

Meat tenderizer…..on any thing I eat…opens the flood gates in about 10 minutes. Otherwise, no laxatives in my sacred temple.

Tap water enema for quick controlled relief.

Beyond an enema to address my constipation issues I have no ‘ plan ’ B ‘ ’ as to a secondary laxative . When a ‘ laxative ’ is as per need is considered and / or is in the offing , I will opt for a very slowly administered , warm , large volume cleansing enema every time . Nothing else is considered .

Can I ask why you don't like mom or citrus mag?

I don't know about favorite, but what works for me and works quickly in like 2 to 3 hours. Bisacdyl on an empty stomach and if I really want a clean out when I start to feel the cramps a shot of mom.

Magic Bullet suppositories

Life is too short for bad beer, bad music, and bad radio.

For whatever reason, I don't cramp up or have much advance notice of an impending bowel movement after taking a laxative. Sometimes my innards will gurgle, but most often it's just some pressure in my rectum and look out…here it comes.

I haven't tried many different brands or kinds, so my favorites might seem limited to some of you. Orally, I enjoy MoM (Milk of Magnesia), but only the cherry flavor. I like the texture and it works within 2 hours - and keeps on working for a good 6-8 hours after the initial expulson.

Anally, glycerin suppositories give me a nice boost. Initially there's a bit of burn in my rectum, then 15 to 20 minutes later there's some more of that and a strong urge to poo.

PEG-3350 (Miralax). It doesn’t cause cramping and you can easily control it‘s effectiveness by raising or lowering the dose.

As I have said before, once a year, between Christmas and New Years, we, as a couple do a cleanse that involves the home made version of Suprep.

Suprep Formula

In 6oz water

Sodium Sulfate 17.5g

potassium sulfate 13g

Magnesium sulfate 1.5g (The form readily available to consumers OTC Epsom salt is NOT anhydrous , you must compensate for the water by using 3g)

User will dilute with 6 oz water and then consume another 16 ounces of water while waiting for it to take effect

Mom would sometimes give us lactulose or sorbitol in orange juice. Soon after that we would know who got it with the breakfast as my or my sister's tummy would really start to rumble. More and more gas would fill our colon and rectum until the moment when whoever got it would say, oh I have to go to the bathroom and the uncontrollable expulsion would start immediately. Meanwhile mom would prepare an enema. In college, I told my girlfriend about this and she would insert an ultra size tampon into my anus after giving me the sorbitol I would feel it expend as the laxative started to have it's effect. Sometimes we would both drink the sorbitol lased ok and insert the tampon into each other . Whoever had to go first would get a crampy enema with the recipe chosen by the other. My girlfriend was very creative choosing lobelia root, crushed bisacodyl or suppositories, ox gall(very crampy and painful as it would be given quickly through a long colon tube with me lying on a bedpan as the expulsion would be sudden and uncontrollable), alum, or plain water with some lemon juice added, among other crampy recipes. She woy often win but not always.

@alberto6536

You mom's trick of putting Lactulose (or Sobitol) into a glass juice glass of orange is a great way of hiding a powerful laxative from constipated or withholding kids. Once it has been consumed, a mighty poo is just a matter of time. The only question is when… and it's usually soon.

About how old were you when you got these ‘mom’s surprises' and did you get them for constipation or what? Also, an enema, after a dose of Lactulose has worked, is unnecessary. The Lactulose pretty much cleans someone out.

Ducolax tablets but take a few of them and just wait

Sean, the enemas we're herbal and relaxing as they were warm, slow and chamomile or catnip or mint. Sometimes some other herbs. We were around ten or eleven when we started getting them and it was for constipation or to clean us out.

Trying Castor Oil for the first time this weekend. Any tips?

Don't stray too far from the toilet and don't trust any farts!

Take two or three tablespoons and drink a half glass of warm water , then continue drinking warm water every fifteen minutes during the first hour. Soon you will hear your stomach start to rumble. Taken in the morning on an empty stomach, expect a result in as little as two to three hours. It may take longer. I follow with a warm soapy enema to wash out the oil. Then one or two rinse enemas.

Miralax mixed into hot tea with a little bit of sugar.

@Sean My mother had read that taking “irritant” laxatives such as magnesia was bad for the bowels, and made them susceptible to getting used to laxatives to work properly. So I never got any of these, only Lubentyl, which, as you said, is not really a laxative, more like a grease to lubricate the bowels and speed up the process.

Mom was however very much against “straining” to expel hardened waste, with the reasoning that it could damage my rectum (hemorrhoids and so on). Indeed, on occasion I had bled following a hard to pass bowel movement. So her directives to me was that if I could not pass stool, I should not strain, and instead seek help, which meant a glycerin suppository. (And, if I recall correctly, this also meant I would be fed Lubentyl for a while, and I could be given further suppositories until my bowel movements were soft enough.)

I think mom's glycerin suppositories were the civilized version of what she had endured as a kid: the soap "pin".

@Pecan_nutjob

You mom was correct about straining causing problems like hemmis, but wrong about her chosen cure. A glycerin suppository does little to nothing to soften poo or make it easier to pass. They usually just remove any choice you have about pooing.

However, after pooing from the suppository, being given the softener for several days is a good idea to let you passage heal.
