Completely naked for a skin exam

That sounds completely normal. It’s easier to take notice of discolorations and marks.

The actual standard for a dermatology skin check is every inch of the body, including the genital, perineum, anus as well as the soles of the feet. That say, a number of younger dermatologists these days do not check the genitalia/perineum or anal opening unless you specifically request it or express issues. My current dermatologist, when she does my annual, will have me strip to underwear and gown, then she will check my head back arms and hands, legs and feet, chest, back, and shoulders (not necessarily in that order) She will them move my underwear so she can look at the crease where my legs join my torso and my butt cheeks. If I have an issue, she will have me lower my shorts just enough so she can look at the affected area. I don't think she has even checked my anal/perianal area. Then she'll have me dress. Even if she checks the crotch and genitals, it is less than 10 minutes. It turns out she is not in my insurance network, so I may change to a different one.

I suppose I am naive about this, but for those of you who have had them, is it because you wanted them or because your PCP saw something that needed to be checked? During the past ten years I do not think my doctor saw any more of my skin than the face and arms / hands, because he never has me undress.

I had an appointment with the skin specialist at one of those “express care” clinics, due to some pain in the skin over my ribs, right side. Their dermatologist was a lovely eastern European woman in her early 40s, very talkative, friendly and warm.

She had me take off my shirt, and examined the affected area, soon determining there was nothing seriously wrong. She also inspected the skin at my back, my underarms, etc. She then asked, "While you're here, would you like me to do a full-body exam? No extra charge."

That sounded good to me. I agreed, and she nodded. "Take off your pants and underwear, please."

I slipped out of my shoes. Then, with my back turned to her, I unbuckled, unzipped, and let my pants and briefs slide to the floor, giving her a view of my hips and newly bare legs. I turned back to face her as I stepped out of my pants, with my still-flaccid cock comfortably swaying slightly at what felt like bottom-of-scrotum length.

The nurse understanding my embarrassment told me to close my eyes, and think about something nice. She slipped the gown completely off me. I stood there naked in front of them, eyes closed tightly. After a minute or so I felt her place the gown over my shoulders again. The Doctor said, nothing to worry about. But use sunscreen, since you will be working as a lifeguard, we will see you again next September. The nurse said you can dress and come out to the desk. They left the room

My annual check-up is tomorrow. But it’s not with my usual dermatologist—she must be on vacation, so I’m seeing a substitute. It’s stressing me out a bit.

As promised, here's a short report of my visit.

I had an appointment with my usual dermatologist's replacement. I was pleasantly surprised to find her a very pretty young woman.

I waited a little over an hour before being seen, even though there were only two people ahead of me.

The dermatologist then called me in, and we had a standard consultation before the examination. During this consultation, I realized she was very friendly. But strangely, it made me a little intimidated.

When it was time for the examination, she asked me to undress without giving any further instructions. Since there's no changing room in the office, I had to do it in front of her. I undressed down to my underwear, and as I was about to head towards the examination table, she stopped me and said, a little embarrassed, "Completely, if possible."

I obviously obeyed and found myself naked in front of her.

I lay face down on the examination table, and she began to examine me with a magnifying glass.

I must admit that I found this situation very exciting and I panicked a little because I quickly got an erection.

I was naked, erect, and I knew she was going to ask me to turn around.

I didn't know how I was going to handle the situation.

This request came a few minutes later.

I turned around, covered my penis with my hands, and apologized.

She smiled and replied that it wasn't a problem. She continued her examination and asked me to remove my hands so she could examine me. This situation was extremely awkward but also very exciting.

She finished her examination and gave me an appointment for next year.

I will keep very fond memories of this visit.

As Bill Clinton might say that depends on what you mean by completely naked. If you mean naked but covered by a gown, the answer is yes. But naked without a gown, sheet or any other covering? Never.

What's this about France not doing nude exams anymore? God, they really have changed HARD in the last few years.

I vaguely recall I did get briefly naked for a skin check with my primary care NP. It was a spur of the moment thing, like "can I get a skin check?" I already had most of my clothes off anyway. We got along. We had a mellow relationship.

I had a woman dermatologist from France for many years and when I called the clinic because my doctor found a spot on my calf I was told the only doctor taking new patients was female and she insisted on a “full body” screening because cancers can form anywhere on the skin. I said I was ok with that and at the appointment I was til to strip to my underwear and sit on the table. She came in and looked over my entire body while I was standing then asked me to remove my underwear and then she sat down and examined both sides. She was very thorough and then she said to lie facing down so she could cut the spot off which turned out to be pre cancerous so I had to see her every 6 months for awhile then extended to one year. I went to her for 10 years until I moved 3 hours away.

My current woman dermatologist examines every part of my body but prefers I strip naked but put on a gown and she adjusts the gown as she goes along which I’m ok with because she’s very thorough as well.

I went to see a dermatologist in September 2025 for a skin exam and a check-up of my moles. She asked me to strip down to my underwear, so I took off everything except my briefs. At no point during the exam did she ask me to remove my briefs So she didn't examine my private parts, which is normally part of the skin exam.

I am 50 years old I have never been to a dermatologist to have a skin check. I mainly just go to my primary care Dr for any required appointments and tests. I usually wear boxers underneath a gown they give me to wear. When required I remove my boxers for exams.

I just had a full skin exam from my dermatologist. The young Medical Assistant asked if there were any Concerns, so I mentioned some spots on my temples, some occasional itching in my scalp, and a cyst on my scrotum. Then she told me to undress to my underwear and gave me a paper sheet to cover myself. After she left I undressed and sat on the exam chair. Then the doctor and the assistant came in. Most of the exam was conducted while I was wearing briefs, but the doctor asked see the cyst. That required me to remove my underwear. I put my right leg on the exam chair and lifted my genitalia to show her the cyst way in the back. She said it was benign but I could have it removed if it causes any trouble. No treatment was recommended. Then she summarized the exam while I was naked under the sheet. After they left the room I snapped a picture of myself in the mirror and then got dressed.

An almost a year ago, when I was having a prevention check-up at my GP, I was advised to also have a comprehensive preventive skin examination. I could choose the dermatology specialist doctor I wanted to go to myself. The doctor was a man, about my age. The references on the internet showed very positive reviews of this doctor.

On the day I went for the check-up, I first was at the reception, where the assistant filled in my health insurance details and other personal details, because it was my first time there. She then told me to go further into the waiting room and that the doctor would call me to the office at the appointed time. After a while, I was called to the office, the nurse again wanted to see my health insurance card and filled in other details. She then told me to go to the changing room, where I had to completely undress and after I had undressed, to go through the next door to the doctor's office.

When I entered the doctor's office, I was completely naked. The doctor first asked me if I was taking regular medications, if I had any skin problems in the past, and if I had any allergies. Then the examination began. He told me to stand directly under the light, I will first visually check the entire skin on my body, keep arms at sides unless he says otherwise. Then he told me that he would check about 4 moles on my body with a more detailed way.

He then told me to raise right foot towards, then left foot towards. Bend over. Pull the foreskin of penis over the glans. Turn around, bend over, everything is fine. The entire examination took a maximum of 10 minutes. The doctor then wrote a short report. After writing it, he told me to go get dressed and that another preventive examination is recommended in a year.

As a practicing doctor, yes for a comprehensive preventative dermatology exam you need to be completely naked. The doctor must be able to see every inch of you to make sure that nothing is missed. You can schedule this type of exam with a specialist of the same sex if that would make you feel more comfortable.

Dermatology exams should be performed while patient is nude. It is the most efficient way to have a through exam. I am always nude for my dermatology exams.
