Mandatory medicals

Have you ever had to undergo mandatory medicals, either health authorities, government, military enforced? Would be interesting to hear about your experiences.

I had to for my first job. It was a public sector role and a preemployment physical was mandatory. After filling out the paperwork with HR, they scheduled the appt for that day and sent me to their doctor who partners with them. It was a pretty unexpected, but pleasant surprise

Yes my military enlistment physical was mandatory and done as a group exam.

My current job requires that I get a physical done yearly.

And how do you feel about it? Was it embarassing or humiliating in any way? Do you think it was relevant to your work?

Twice. Once in Junior High School during Gym Class in Grade 8 when we boys were all examined one after the other as we lined up in the gym, including having to lower our gym shorts and jockstraps for a genital examination and hernia check and a look at our anuses as we bent down and the nurse spread our butt cheeks. There was no privacy as we could see the person ahead of us being examined. Again in my graduating year at University. A dozen of us were examined at a time completely naked by medical and nursing students as we moved from station to station in a large open room for each part of the exam. Again there was no privacy as we could all see each other being probed and prodded.

As regards your two exams, it was not uncommon in a recent past to have such exams performed in that way

in what year did you have these exams, was it in a far past ?

I find a little strange that you were allowed to keep your gym short at the exam during a Pe lesson at grade 8 of high school as a junior while you were a group of 12 all naked for an exam at university being therefore older.

At junior high school grade, was the exam performed by a nurse with a doctor or only by a school nurse ? was the exam performed in presence of the Pe teacher or anybody else who came in the gym, or was already here? or were you exposed to the view of other persons who walked through the gym to go elsewhere ?

I presume that you might be about 15 -16 age ?

Do you were informed before the exam one day or several that you would have an exam in the gym ?

Were you forced to wear a jockstrap at gym lessons, so that you might lower it when it was time to have the genitals, herna and anus exam

I presume that it could have been much more worst since you could have been instructed to undress until jockstraps without being allowed to keep your gym short , so you would have been lined up with all butts completely exposed to the view of each other, funny and efficient to obtain a strict discipline or still worst all stark naked and waiting your turn in your birthday suit like at the exams in the army in a recent past

I've had three mandatory physicals, one at the militery pre-induction center, one for a at a workplace, and one my freshman year of college. The military one was conductred with pants on until the genital and anal exams, in which we were lined up naked. The workplace one had me in only a gown and disposable sandals. The doctor lifted the gown for the genital exam. For the freshman exam, I was told to undress completely by an old-school male doctor while he watched. I was then examined completely naked. The freshmen girls were requited to do the same.

I think everyone should undergo mandatory medicals, particularly during and before leaving schools, college and University

@esaterman. I was 12 years old at the exam in Grade 8 in Junior High School in 1958 (I had skipped a grade earlier in elementary school). We were told about the exam in the previous gym class 2 days before. Jockstraps were required in gym class. The exam was performed by the school nurse. The PE teacher was present to keep order but no-one else was in the gym. The exam in University was in 1978 when I was 22. We were informed a week before and told when to show up at the university health clinic. When we showed up we were scheduled in groups of 12 and told to undress completely in the waiting room before being called as a group into the large open examination room where various stations were set up manned by either student nurses or doctors. We circulated from one station to the next for various parts of the exam and could see each other. The final station was where we were given a TB test and told to return a week later for the results to be seen.

Throughout my career, I was obligated to take and pass annual physical exams to include comprehensive bloodwork, vision testing including depth of field and color blindness, hearing tests and spirometry testing along with a doctor’s hands-on examination. Always stressful days leading up to the physical as continued employment depended on good results.

Sports physicals were mandatory when I was in school. That's it.

Not a full medical, and i suppose not absolutley mandatory, but I've had to have an ECG to get medication. That still involved me being topless and having my chest touched, which as a trans masc person who hasn't had chest surgery is a big thing.

Also having breast exams (and at the first forced photos) at my top surgery consultations. Could be argued that isn't forced to, but it's something I've had to do to get rhe surgery i feel is essential to me.

I would not call school medical exams mandatory back in the early to mid 70s but if you wanted to try out for a sports team you had to get it over with so every fall we would gather in the gym and be taken 10 at a time into the nurses office and told to strip to our undes.

I recall also that physical exams were mandatory for a lot of jobs that no longer require them if you needed the job badly enough.

Physicals, or a doctors release were mandatory to participate in high school and college sports. Military induction and annual flight physical in the Navy - those were pretty exhaustive at first, the became more routine.

Medicals were mandatory when I was at school. They were full head to toe, including a genital examination.

I have several for jobs some very simple some more involved.

@drmyk2 It’s been a hundred years since my last flight physical so specifics aren’t “fresh”. Our initial medical evals at NAMI (:Naval Aerospce Medical Institude) were exhaustive including centrifuge eval g-force tolerance), exhaustive biometrics to determine which aircraft you could fit into, ejection seat evals, extensive hearing, vision testing (acuity, depth perception, peripheral etc), vertigo assessment, plus all heart/lung/physical/dental assessment. Due to having had a couple of sports concussions, I had an electroencephologram. If I recall correctly, there was also a pyschiatric eval. The whole certification process was spread out over several days. After that, annual flight evals (maybe 2 hours?) were thorough physicals with emphasis on visual factors, reflexes etc. - obviously more thorough than routine physicals in the private sector, but nowhere nearly exhaustive as the initial eval.

Yeah, back in 1992 when I first started in the airline industry. I was hired and offered a training class, but I needed to pass their physical exam. This was with the company doctor at headquarters. I arrived and checked in with the nurse. She lead me back to the exam room; this was a set of suites so that multiple exams could take place. From what I remember it was same sex as I was one of 12 males for that day.

Much like a school exam with more emphasis on stretch, lifting and movement. The nurse took the BP, oral temp and height and weight. She then gave me a specimen cup and I went down the hall to the bathroom. Left the cup in the bathroom.

Came back into the room and was given a gown and told everything off but underwear. I just striped off and left the gown where it was.

Doc knocked and came in. He was about 50-60 years old. Made some small talk about the company and the type of exam this will be. He advised unless I was really in bad shape I should pass the exam.

He did the EENT and skin exam; I have a lot of moles and he advised I see a dermatologist, which I do. Most of the rest of the exam was exercising, heart rate and stress tests including a "duck walk" along with jumping jacks.

I did need to lose my shorts and he did a genital exam along with a DRE. I was kind of surprised, but he said "I need to complete the form and these areas are on the form. No shots however, I did have a blood test.

After that I have not had a yearly exam with the company.

I think the closest thing I had to a truly mandatory medical exam was a scoliosis test at school. We all went into the entry space of the locker room and took turns going behind the farthest bank of lockers with the school nurse.

No one told me what to expect, so I was really nervous. When it was my turn, I went back, and handed her my form. She then told me to put my shirt on the bench, and had me bend over so she could check my spine.

Both me and my friends were very, very interested in what happened when the girls got checked. Obviously everyone would need to take their shirts off, but what about bras? In junior high it was a lot to handle.

I've talked about these loads of times before on here, but I had a couple before I went to high school that were pretty basic - stripped down to vest and briefs for height and weight then lifting my vest to be listened to on my chest, back and belly - then full head to toe exams at high school in my boxers including going behind a screen for a genital exam.
