My mom came with me at the private doctor's appointment until 18 age in the 60's in france but she was very discreet during the exam undressed and turned her head to look away if I was weighted or had an inspection of my spine in briefs and still more if the doctor pulled down my brief for a genital's exam.

A (Male) friend of mine always had his mother attend his physical exams, sometimes with his father, well into his 20s. This is relatively recently, even as recent as 10 years ago. Regarding my aunt repeating things, it was literally that. The doctor would say something like "take a deep breath for me" and my aunt would jump in with something like "You heard the doctor, Colin, take a deep breath." I was one foot away from the doctor, I had clearly heard. Not sure why she did that. I can only guess. I think she was a little insecure about her role there. She was only an aunt--and only an aunt by marriage--so I think she felt the need to participate as much as she could to justify her presence there. Make sure the doctor knew she spoke for the family when it came to me. Make sure I didn't forget that she was my caregiver and in charge of me.

Most of my examinations did not involve intimate parts and I don't recall where she looked. Two however come to mind:

My mom was always present when at the pediatrician's office. She was very open, friendly, and chatty with the doctor and his nurse. Quite often, she even struck up conversations with others in the waiting area. Much to my chagrin, and embarrassment, she would offer what worked for her at home. That usually had to do with my digestive health and eating habits. I was a big kid.

Nurse Marge would usually engage in some preliminary discussions concerning general health and progress. Mom and Marge would discuss my quick growth and eating habits. She always asked if mom was keeping up on my BM's and whether the enemas that the doctor prescribed were effective. Mom wasn't shy about telling both Marge and the Doctor that she gave me an enema any time I missed a daily BM.

When the doctor came in, mom would repeat the rundown with him. I recall having some difficulty with my foreskin and the doctor stretched it back causing some bleeding. He showed my mom how to retract it and apply some salve. In all future visits he would check my penis and and show mom if there were any issues. He always told her to make sure I was washing it regularly.

My mom was always trying to convince the doctor and nurse that she was staying on top of things for all of us kids. I suspect it was because she relied on those house calls quite often. She didn't drive until quite a bit later. Her obsession with enemas and digestive health may well have been triggered by the doctor scolding her when she called because I was constipated. "Just give that kid an enema" was a common statement.

My sister is two years older than me. We have always been in the exam room together. The doctor would raise our butts off of the table and pull our panties down to look. It was no big deal for us. She did move us apart once but she could tell we were not comfortable like that. Plus my sister is scared of the first room going down the hall which is the emergency room. I was the tomboy and never got hurt. My sister was the girly girl and was always getting her foot cut or something and having to be taken to the ER. I used to like to watch it all. The doctor is not doing us both at the same time. Lol It's not like me jumping off of the exam table and my sister jumping on. Lol When we were kids, yes. Now when we go we usually bring my sister's girlfriend and the girlfriend's niece. And no we still don't get naked and rotate on the exam table. It usually happens where my sister will be in with me. I will go in with my sister's girlfriend's niece and so on. Then I will be in with my sister etc.

Offer a chaperone

However, be aware that while some people may feel more comfortable with a chaperone in the room, others may feel less comfortable having anyone in the room other than the provider—it's the offering that's key! My doctor knows us.

How old were you for the circumcision and when you had appendicitis? How did you feel at the time about your mom seeing you examined like that?

A woman from Russia told me that boys would get physicals at school and many of their mom's attended. While they were mostly in their undershorts, they did get pulled down for the hernia test and all the moms in line could see from the back. She said this was up to, including 14 year olds and as recently as 10-15 years ago. She didn't know if it had stopped or not.

You felt humiliated after the appendectomy thinking about your mom seeing you get a DRE, or something else? My mom was still taking my temp rectally at that age, so I'm not sure I would have been embarrassed about her seeing me get a DRE, but I don't know. I do know people who are in pain are often not embarrassed, but afterwards, thinking about it, they become embarrassed.

I realize that it must have been how doctors worked in those days, perhaps how they were taught to handle young patients - I've read similar testimonies on this site… There is a phrase in French "mis devant le fait accompli" - Deepl translates it as "presented with a fait accompli". It means that people act without asking for your input so at the end you are presented with an accomplished result.

Come to think of it this was the same issue as with circumcision - I had not been told what exactly they would do and was shocked by the results.

What was easily noticeable was none of them complained about her instruction to make us undress publickly or underlined that it was embarrassing for us, but you might understand that it was still a time where very few persons dared to critizize an instruction of somebody being in charge and responsable.

Besides they had approved the nurse when she had said that the set up might be efficient to not loose time because we were numerous, more than the fathers..

I am not at all surprised by that relation, it was certainly true because the modesty of boys and young men was not a concern in Russia like we could see in photos of draft physical examinations or documentaries about them, In some local centers mothers could accompany their sons aged of 17-18 and watch them stand stark naked to wait in a corridor or in a large gym where took place the exam or any other kind of facility. And there was always women and even girls among the medical staff who supervised the draftees in the nude and performed the exams.

I have often read relations about exams for summer camp performed with a large group of boys naked in line or male students at university in medical clinics where the students were exposed to the view of patients in the hall, it was different for girls students ?

For me I am sure that it was different because the nurse had said to the parents that the girls were never examined in the same way to reassure those who had daughters, it was never a group exam even for the first part of the exam with public undressing and the complete nudity was not required on the standart medical form for the weigh-in. I agree, that would have been the right thing to do. tbh, the most a dr. has ever said to me before performing a DRE is 'you're going to feel some pressure back here; try and relax.' Most haven't even said that. I think for kids today, the doctors are much more sensitive and explain things. A co-worker of mine took her 13 year old son to the emergency room for abdominal pain. At some point the doctor said she needed to do a rectal exam. She left the room so the mom could talk to her son about the exam and the importance of it. The son had some concerns about having a rectal exam. Years ago that wouldn't have happened. It would have been 'pull your shorts down and roll on your side,' and with no consideration of whether or not his mom should leave the room. Certainly there was no conversation about it.

I think you're being very generous in offering that the reason the moms may not have looked away from all those naked boys is that she may have wanted to compare them to her son. I think realistically, it's likely they were turned on by the site of 16 year old boys, who to a great extent, have developed like a man. The nudity was more admitted for boys

The woman of whom I spoke was not a mother nor a medical person. She was 24 years old and relating to me what boys used to complain about regarding their physical exams. The last she heard of it was when they were 14, so ten years earlier, and that conversation was about 5 years ago.

Just to clarify, the boys didn't have to wait in line naked; they were in their underwear, but when they got to the doctor, they had to drop their undies for the genital exam, and then everyone in line could see them from behind. Of course there was female staff assisting the doctor, who could see them in front.

I think you and your friends having to wait in line naked was totally unnecessary. There's no justification for it. As for weight, the weight on underwear is negligible. When it comes to the hernia exam, pulling your underwear down doesn't take but a couple seconds, so it's not a matter of slowing down the line.

I feel like she tried to act like she wasn’t looking but when the time came for me to hop off the table and drop my pants it was clear she was more vested. In fact I think that’s when she asked most of the general health questions thus causing me to be bottomless longer nearly every time. There was a time she brought up a genuine genital concern of hers which lead me to having to step completely out of my shorts and underwear to lay back on the table for further exam.

Honestly, I’ve got to do a shout-out to my mom here, who was a pain in my ass about so much when I was a kid AND a teenager alike, but whenever she accompanied me to the doctor she was the coolest, and really didn’t react in a way that embarrassed me at all. She was there just to fulfil her duties as a parent, both making me feel safe and talking to the doctor about my health when I couldn’t always give an accurate picture by talking on my own, and she did it all perfectly. During the exam I’ve detailed in other posts where I got a massive load in my pants at being examined, largely brought on by the sensation of having a cold stethoscope put on my bare chest, she really didn’t react to it at all, other than to exchange a look with me as if to remind me she was there and say that what was happening really didn’t matter, because what mattered was me getting a check-up to make sure I was healthy and nothing about it was odd. I don’t even know if she noticed my reaction, and if she did it was just a case of ‘He’s a boy and this happens’ and it didn’t matter. I doubt she’d remember the fine details nowadays like I did, so I’ve never wanted to ask her, although when I did talk to her about certain odd fetishes I had during a time when I was feeling severely depressed and mixed up, she gave me no indication that she remembered any of what started it, so I guess she didn’t notice at all at the time or just forgot it because it somehow wasn’t significant to her.
