The feeling when dentist finds a cavity

I was wondering how you feel when the dentist finds a cavity?

Are you humiliated, do you enjoy it or are you indifferent?

I do have two fillings, but I first received them s a child, and had them refilled as a grown up after they started leasing after 15+ years so it didn't feel like my personal failure. Right now I think that one tooth might have a cavity and I think that I'll feel very humiliated when the dentist finds it, even though he's great.

I'm at the point where I've had so many I'm pretty much indifferent. Initially I can tell you that I did feel embarrassed but we're no longer at that point 😂

I'm still embarrassed, especially when multiple cavities are found.

Then, when they have to drill, I always imagine how this is heard in the waiting room and how the other patients make fun of me and my bad teeth.

I always feel a little upset at first. As soon as they lay you back and get you all numbed up and start drilling your teeth its not bad then.

One word sums it up…sucks

I really enjoy having cavities filled. The BEST part is getting the numbing injection before the drilling starts. I like the gradual, spreading numbness as it slowly takes hold. I will be seeing my dentist in a week or so, and at least two of my old fillings need replacing, so I’ll be enjoying the pain killing shots in my gums! Anyone else like this?.

I enjoy the thought of it more, but honestly there is something satisfying about a dentist telling you that you need cavities filled.

It's a wonderful humiliation, especially since I know what comes next.

More feelings in regards to how much I have to pay to get such a small filling, haha. In my recent appointment, they did an x-ray as I had not been to the dentist in 3 years so once he did the x-ray, he sent me on my way, so I didn't find out the results of the x-ray until three weeks later when he booked me in for an appointment as he found a small cavity to fill. I don't really feel much when the dentist finds a cavity other than I knew it, haha.

Dread, the dentist is incredibly expensive!

Disappointed that I have a cavity but I do find love the thought of having to come back in a week or so and getting hooked up w/ nitrous oxide and vital signs monitors. I always get nitrous when I have dental work especially if it is painful due to my white coat hypertension.

I just want to get it filled before it turns into a root canal!

Certainly don't actually like having cavities, but the anticipation of procedures to come is surely a tension I appreciate. I really like the moments right before the dentist delivers the news, too…

My heart really sinks when the dentist finds a new cavity or even a problem with a filling. I feel like I have failed. Extremely submissive moment.

I don't really mind dental visits but if the dentist finds a cavity, loose crown or other issue, I just, for some reason, dread having to make another appointment. I usually have an extremely busy schedule and I don't like having to add another commitment to the list. However, I really don't mind it when I'm back for the filling because I get to lie back and relax for awhile in the chair and my dentist is almost completely painless!

When my dentist finds a cavity, my first reaction is,'this is going to cost me'

I've had a “full mouth reconstruction” which was three implants and the rest crowns for a “pageant quality smile”

I hate it and usually it hurts a lot.

I've never experianced it. My teeth are good as can be. 0 cavities, even as a kid I had none.

None of my thoughts are positive, when that happens. My first thought is physical and financial pain. And my final concern is whether the dentist is honest, or a thief.

It’s a rollercoaster of emotions. when my dentist first tells me I have a cavity i get anxious and a little scared but it’s a really big turn on. I go home and count down the days, and fantasize about the dentist drilling my teeth without much anesthesia while his assistant uses all sorts of sex toys on me. 🫶🏼🥰

I visit the dentist regularly every 6 months, getting a cleaning. Although I like the hygienist very much, I always feel she “Just can't wait” to find a cavity. Last week, she takes x-rays, and says with glee: “Oh.. looks like you have a cavity”. After the cleaning, the dentist comes in to “inspect” and POKES AROUND THE CAVITY AREA (which didn't hurt whatsoever when I came in), and discusses out loud with her “how do I fill that area there?” (He has been a dentist for 30 yrs). Sometimes I wonder if she doesn't get a COMMISSION $$ for finding a cavity. Have an appointment for the “cavity” for tomorrow. The cleaning + xrays set me back $325. (These NYC suburbs are very costly for medical care). I'm sure the cavity will probably be $250+? I cancelled my dental insurance a few yrs back. Seems cheaper to just “pay as I go”.

The last one, about 10 years ago, the thought was “what the hell is this going to cost me”. The most recent dental work, other than cleaning, was a zirconium crown that ran me $1425 with all work included. The crown was $1200.

When I was a kid in the US, it always felt that dentists were constantly reproaching you for having anything wrong with your teeth. That it was always something that you had maliciously done on purpose to annoy him. They would sigh and tsk tsk and give you looks of disappointment as if you had somehow failed them. And they always found something, a cavity or whatever. Even when I knocked out several teeth playing football, the dentist acted like I had done so on purpose. This in spite of the large bills my parents then paid.

So my feelings were of dread. What was it going to be next? Catholic nuns in school and dentists, they both seemed to like laying on guilt trips on kids.

Then we moved to Belgium and there the dentists displayed a different attitude. None of the moral high ground and reproachful looks. If there was something wrong, well that is what they were there for, to fix it. And they seemed to approach cavities and other things as something to fix as quickly as possible. No long drawn out and expensive process of temporary fillings and coming back umpteen times.

Never got any sermons like in the US either thank goodness.

And then later when an adult, there wasn't much dread about the costs either, since most was covered by national health insurance. It didn't cost an arm and a leg.

@agracier Same experiences here going to the dentist. Developed a dislike/hatred for them that's still there today! They would chastise me for not brushing well enough before visiting them etc., etc., etc.

I feel nervous .. I can usually tell when the dentist is discovering them , and I’m sure he gets a little kick out of telling me we are going to need some work doimg .

Last time I went it was 5 fillings , all silver on my upper teeth , he really worked the drill hard on me over 2 sessions ,

I just got done at the dentist about to two hours ago. And yes she did find a cavity. And my feelings and thoughts on this are. Well SHIT!! now this is going to cost me some money.

I am nervous when I wait to know if I have cavities. If the dentist tells me I have a cavity I am embarassed because that means that my oral hygiene is not good.

I’m nervous but also excited. Sometimes I ask if there’s time to immediately drill and fill. I hate the suspense of waiting a week to get drilled.
