It was straight sided except where the little ‘waist’ to help strengthen the bottle is, about 2/3 way up.The compromise I found was to insert it was: 2/3 full with sparkling water and then gently squeeze maybe half the remaining air out and closing the lid tightThis gave enough flex to squeeze the base somewhat and make the main section a little oval as I inserted it, but not so small as to make it wrinkly and sharp edged.You have to move smoothly as every shake and twist releases more CO2 and starts to fill the bottle back up.It does feel great as it swells up and stiffens.
