What kinds of enema nozzles did your people have when you were growing up?

The standard black bat-shaped rectal pipe was my mom's weapon of choice attached to a combination enema bag by means of a red hose. I remember it well.

Mother had a large collection of the old black bent vintage nozzles that she kept in a little white childrens shoe box under her sink. Part of the ritual of my enemas was me standing naked in her bathroom and seeing her bring the box out from under the sink. She would pick thru the nozzles always taking her time and deciding which one was going to be used that day. That image still sticks with me

Like others, there was a box on the top shelf of the linen closet that held various enema/douche nozzles, clamps, and accessories that dated back to my grandmother's time. That box held several black curved douche nozzles, one very long (7 inches) black rectal nozzle, a short wide nozzle that I assume was for nasal injections, a long black nozzle with flutes like a douche nozzle, but with holes the full length of the thing, and a long red rubber colon tube with a glass connector. Glass connectors were common in hospitals to connect lengths of tubing.

When I was given enemas by my mother I only remember the standard black rectal nozzle.

When we cleared out my mother's house the old box was gone, but we did find the colon tube with the glass connector with a boxed Rexall Victoria fountain syringe that now resides under our bathroom sink.

For me it was a standard bulb when young then graduated to the red bag white hose and 4 inch white adult enema nozzle.

The box containing the red combination syringe in our house also had infant rectal, adult rectal, and adult vaginal nozzles. The only one that I remember being used on me was the adult rectal one. We also had an infant bulb syringe but I never recall it being used. When well lubed with Vaseline the adult rectal nozzle was quite comfortable when inserted. It is still my preferred nozzle today.

Mom used a large black nozzle most of the time but used a long enema tube sometimes.

All we had were two. The Big Black straight nozzle and the Curved black nozzle. My Mother used the Curved nozzle for her Dushes. She used the big Black Nozzle on me for my Enema's.

I can't imagine anything under a "bat shaped rectal nozzle".

Being blind, I confess I've always struggled a bit with this idea. Am I right that the 'bat' has the large end foremost? That is with the hose connected to the narrow end? Sorry if I'm wrong and that sounds totally daft. Just guessing this for two reasons.

First, a baseball bat's 'business end' is the larger, so I surmise hence the image. Also I would think this shape would aid retention... even if insertion would be a little more difficult. Would have thought narrow end first would tend to pop out unless held, and that would obviously be inconvenient.

Incidentally, what do y'all reckon is the best nozzle shape for staying in without assistance? (excluding inflatables)

When mom was "spoiled for choice," she had a two-piece rubber bulb with a black bakelite nozzle, a rubber bag with a long rubbet hose ending in a long black bakelite nozzle. She pushed the rubber enema tube onto this as needed.

In the end, it didn't matter to me what mom was using... the first enema was always a curd soap enema, which I found awful.

I willingly took the following enemas with clear water, as they washed out the remaining soap. I honestly have to admit that I couldn't get those last two enemas fast enough.

Once mom said she couldn't understand why there was always so much yelling at the first one, but she thought I was downright begging for the next ones. I just said she should just leave the soap out. That was the most important thing for the first enema, she said.

At home, it was understood that the small straight nozzle was for enemas, the long curved one was for douche. It never occurred to me to use the douche nozzle for an enema. That changed when I was an adult, and a new employee of a company that sent me out of town for a three day training session. In preparation for my trip, I bought a new Faultless Travel Syringe. The kind with the bright yellow latex bag, because it would be easy to pack for travel. In my hotel room that evening when I removed it from the packaging, I discovered it only had a douche nozzle. Oh well, make due with what you have and I was pleasantly surprised. While I still used the designated rectal nozzle with my other bag at times, the douche nozzle became a favorite.

Holy mackerel @moliere in your #44 I own that Delrin Big nozzle but I certainly did not pay $84 for that beautiful nozzle. Doggone inflation.

With the exception of early enemas from a small bulb and standard rectal tube the majority of enemas I received were with a douche nozzle and it is still my go to many decades later.

I was a deprived child. My first enema was self-administered at the tender age of 20. Poor lil old me

Only had the black bat shaped enema nozzle used on me same as my mom used on herself, covered with Vaseline.

My first ever remembered enema from a very serious nurse using a can, red hose, black nozzle of unknown size while in hospital for tonsillectomy. When I got home I told Tess (2 years older) about the can and hose ordeal and she told me about seeing me get enemas from mom and our grandmother when younger, and she was proud of the fact that she gets enemas with the hose. I wasn't aware of enemas when very young, so I must have been no older than 3 or 4, but Tess told me "mom gave you enemas with the red squeeze thing in your butt when you were little".

I now had a word for what happened in the hospital and mom gave me my first (remembered) enema from her several weeks after the hospital ordeal using our grandmothers red open top bag, red hose, and a black nozzle. Even though that nozzle found it's way in my butt many times, I'm not sure about the shape, but I think the nozzle was straight.

After hanging overnight in the tub to dry the enema bag was kept in the window seat/storage in the bathroom. It was a large old farmhouse with window seat in every room except the kitchen. The seat in the bathroom was where the enema administrator sat with the recipient over their lap, bag hanging on a hook next to the window. I came to learn that all enemas were given in that large upstairs bathroom, and for the next few years Tess and I got enemas using the red bag and hose while our younger sisters, Diane 1.5 years younger and Robin 3 tears younger than me both got enemas using "the red squeeze thing" as Tess called it, until they were about 6 or 7. For some unknown reason that was kept on a shelf in the medicine cabinet over the sink.

When we moved from the farm in WV to Philadelphia, mom bought a combination enema kit, red hot water bottle, white hose & tip, plastic shut off, the only thing I remember were the words on the box "Rapid Flow" and I could hardly wait to experience it. Missing was the loud CLICK from the old metal shut off. It was stored under the bathroom sink when not in use.

The enemas I received as a child from the District Nurse were given with a higginson syringe not with a nozzle but with a rectal cathater attached to the small nozzle of the syringe. This set up gives much deeper insertion and of course allows the fluid get get higher into the colon.

My parents only used the little thin white screw-on nozzle that came with the fountain syringe when they gave enemas to either me or my sister. My Mom was usually the only one to give enemas as my Dad was almost always at work when the time came to get an enema.

Growing up in the "golden age" of Mom's administering enemas on a regular basis, I remember early on with the regular enema schedule every three or so days, the nozzle was the small white tip that came with the red or yellow bags in the fifties. As I got a little older, around 9 to 10 years old, I can remember many enemas given by Mom with a douche type nozzle which seemed to be easier to hold in while receiving larger volumes. There was also a black bat shaped nozzle that was longer and larger diameter that definitely got the water up further and became my favorite nozzle due to the way it rubbed inside when held in during the process. The few times I received enemas during routine doctors visits and the subject came up to Mom about our bowel habits and we were due for an enema, it was decided we were going to get a good clean out by the doctor or a nurse right then and there. They used a colon tube type catheter looking hose that got way up there. I remember it was hooked to a can type reservoir that got filled a couple of times instead of the bag like we got at home. I remember it seemed like a way larger amount and was made to hold it longer than at home. Definitely the good old golden age and I suspect the start of many a klismo for life! Worked for me!!
