School dances ( especially slow dances )

I never went to any of mine, due to a combination of my overprotective and overly strict parents, as well as my own lack of interest. I regret it now.

What were some of you guys' experiences like, whether you were a middle / high schooler attending the dance, or an adult chaperoning the event? How crazy did things get? How far were the kids allowed to go before they either got separated or even booted out altogether?

Were the adults aware of the hormonal sexual tension between the young slow-dancing couples, or did they see it as completely innocent?

I went to a Jesuit high school by the time I was a teenager and it was all very simple: there were no such things as school dances. They were never organized and private parties were moreover very much frowned on and could get a student in trouble if found out by school. I almost got expelled from school because of a Halloween I organized once, way back before people here in Belgium even knew what Halloween was. The whole funny make-believe theme of 'night when the spirits of the dead come back to earth' was incomprehensible to my school authorities. They were appalled and took it all too seriously, almost like 17th century witch hunters.

I know my own parents seemed to want me to have a social life with the opposite sex and let me organize small parties/dances at home. But they certainly weren't stupid in believing that everything was all hunky-dory innocent. It usually was though, because back then at my age and with my friends, we were basically all a bunch of wimps anyway.

In the 5th and 6th grades our PE instructor (Gordon Hathaway, Google him to see his rope skipping fame) used to do square dances often for our exercise. I had a few favorite girls for dancing but then came grade 7 to 12 in the high school building and it was a boys school, the girls went to a separate school. there was a "Teen Canteen" on Saturday nights in the gym. I went there a couple times but it was really slanted toward the wishes of the older teens and I didn't know any of the dances so I quit. My social life became the school band where the girls joined us and building dragsters at night.

I went to many and no, nothing was allowed to happen beyond dancing. Maybe a kiss or two at most.

Wait a minute- hold up! Building dragsters??? As a lifelong petrolhead, you're speaking MY language now. What was THAT all about???

What sorts of expressions did the adults have on their faces during this? Stern? Worried? Amused? Jaded? Bored? A knowing smirk?

I can't help but wonder if any of the boys got so worked up that they ended up having an ahem “accident”, if you know what I mean. And whether or not the girls knew that they did…

I don’t really remember the chaperones so I couldn’t say. As to the other, who know. I do remember boys getting a boner while slow dancing. I don’t know if it went further.

@Nurse_Phillips any hands drift down from you waist to your … while slow dancing?

I was similar to you. I never went to any. One my mom was strict as well and made me feel ashamed to be close to anyone. I as you wish I would have gone to a few. I think it might have helped me grow mentally and not have as much socal anxiety. I really missed out I think. My mom probably felt she was protecting me actually hurt me by not letting me grow mentally at this age.

I went with another band member after band practice one night when he went to see a guy down the road from the high school. That guy was building a dragster and his brother was building a deuce coupe. I went back by myself the next night and ended up joining them building whatever they had. After high school and a hitch in the army me and the older brother got together again and built a BB/Gas dragster which we raced from 1964 through 1972. By 1965 we had it together so it was winning races and that was the year we met Shirley as she was doing the same thing we were: going to the strips that had money prizes in our eliminator bracket. It always ended up us and her in the final round until 1972 when we quit and she turned pro with Connie Kalitta. She beat us only once over those years with our new spare clutch in her car. She hurt her clutch on the previous round at New England Dragway and if she couldn't make it to the starting line for the final they wouldn't pay either of us so we loaned her our spare knowing that would likely give her the win. She kept the money but she gave us all the contingency prizes. She was one of the best drivers I ever knew except for our driver. Her husband Jack was a damn good car builder too.

So I gave up girls for dragsters because after a date the girl was usually not available again but after a race the dragster always was.

Roscoe- much like you, I gave up on girls in favor of cars a long time ago. As a perpetually celibate, dateless dork who suffered severe depression and anxiety as a result, my passion for machines literally saved my life. Without it, I might have ended myself long ago.

That being said, my parents' constant demands royally fucked any racing aspirations I had long ago.

Nurse Philips- so how many boners were YOU poked by LOL?

@eeetime my ass? Sure sometimes. If I liked the boy I let him, if not I stopped it.

School dances, and weekly town dances - oh those were halcyon days in my life. Wish I could go back. If you've seen the movie Peggy Sue Got Married it sums up the way I would see things if I could go back…

I liked that movie but not as much as:

So how many boners did you get poking your tummy? Were the boys always locked and loaded, or did some say limp from nerves?

That was a loooong time ago. I remember it happening, probably more than not. My memory of boys in HS was they got hard if the wind blew

Any standout memories or secondhand stories of boners, groping, makeout sessions, or boys blasting their boxers?

My husband claims, when he was in high school, that he got hard walking past a donut shop.

In HS I was like the bumper sticker: “Even the crack of dawn excites me”.

I remember in the early 60's skirts got short but pantyhose wasn't prevalent yet. I dropped a lot of pencils in my day. Garters, panty girdles, oh my…

Getting on the bus was an adventure in upskirt. Thankfully I had school books for cover 😉

Mini skirts were in when I was in high school and the boys would paste mirrors inside their books.

I went to many dances in middle & high school. Every dance played some slow songs that kids would dance slowly to. Of course slow dancing at that age is just putting your hands on each other and awkwardly swaying to the music. Boys would almost always at least try to eventually lower our hands so they are resting on the girls butt. Then we would giggle and brag to our friends that we “touched her ass”. At some point, I remember it was cool for the guys to put their hands in the girls back pockets during the dance. Depending on the relationship with the girl (girlfriend/ friend/ acquaintance/ stranger), would determine how close we stood to each other and where we put our hands. Sometimes you're basically hugging them, pressing your body into theirs as close as you can. Other times, we stood a foot apart, hands on his shoulders and her waist.

When school first started having dances, we were pretty young, so the sexual tension wasn't quite what it is at an older age… but it was still there to a degree. Probably less sexual tension and more awkward nervousness. But yes, at that age sex was ALWAYS on my mind, at least somewhat. I popped many boners at dances. Some probably weren't noticed as we danced so far apart. Most however were either pressed into my partners thigh or at least rubbing against her while we swayed. Not one single girl ever said anything to me about it. Nobody went screaming, running away. Nobody ever told on me. I did have a couple that seemed to hold me tighter and press into me a bit more. But it's also possible that was all in my mind. Before anybody asks, no, I never ejaculated while dancing.

The adult chaperones weren't idiots, of course they knew what was on our minds and what we really wanted... Same as they did at that age. Chaperones only broke up fights and discouraged as much stupidity from us as they could. Everybody was usually pretty cool about it all.

We rarely had school dances. The Jesuits didn't encourage contact of any sort with the other sex. In the cooler months we were however, encouraged to have parties at each other's homes by our parents who were keen for their teenage children to mix and socialise. During the summer months we spent most of the day at the beach until quite late into the night. Someone would organise some music and we had a party by moonlight. We were given quite a lot of freedom really, and the parents/chaperones only intervened if someone got caught up in the moment and went too far. Since we all wore swimming costumes and the girls were in bikinis, a lot of skin contact was made with the consequent visible reactions from us boys. It was quite a natural and relaxed attitude and some girls often used to smile and comment about it and either enjoy it or move away acting all coy and innocent. Others would act offended and tell the poor boy off, embarrassing him in front of everyone. Our friend John wasn't allowed slow dances by the girls as the poor lad was known to be very quick on the draw and he lost it very easily.

An idyllic situation really. Like all the others I had my fair share of erections and also got told off by some girl, which I hated so I did my best to conceal the condition. Not easy when one is wearing Speedos, often necessitating a quick dip in the sea.

@ddell2 like your husband I was exactly the same. Inexplicably it had a mind of its own and made an appearance at the most inappropriate times. Sitting on a bus…..in the dentist's waiting room…. meeting a girl in the street and even following a horse on my bicycle! Go figure.

Ahhh, school dances.

During the slow dances, it was common for the guys to ‘hump’ the girls, pressing their hard-ons against her. There was dry humping where nothing happened and wet humping where the guy would get off in his tighty-whities. I came home with many sticky damp underpants. Some of the gals would grind back, while coyly smiling to see if she could be responsible for his messing his undies. I don't thing I ever saw a pair of boxers on a guy back in the 50's, everyone wore Jockeys or maybe another similar brand, and always white. At the time, anything and nothing could cause an erection, and it took very little to cause an explosion in my shorts. Just a smile or the slightest press back against me and I lost it. Hormones were raging and there was no fighting their effects.

I LOVE to dance. I love to dance with my partner (not the current one, he's never danced with me over the time we've been together and I miss it something horrible). I would love to put up my stripper pole and dance for my partner as well… When I was a teen dances were angst for me. I wasn't one of those girls that had the guys woo-ing over them. I was the overly developed (big chested) tomboy that played tackle sports with the boys and competed with them non-stop. I had a few slow dances in school… maybe pity? Either way, I'll never forget the boys who DID dance with me back then. It was such a turn on…. dancing is such a great prelim to sex.

Was told one time that it was not far from slow dancing on the dance hall floor to the bedroom door. More than one young lady knew that the harder they rubbed their tight girdle encased tummy against the front of a guy, the sooner there would be a rapid response. There was a reason to wear a nice long dinner jacket and be able to cover up any embarrassing moments brought on by hormones out of control. Fast forward to years later and I am now a teacher and chaperone at evening formal dance. Lots of hormones flowing that evening. Plenty of slow dancing where almost all of the couples would head to the dance floor. Standing next to me was a rather lovely blonde teacher who would have made a great dance partner for me that evening. I suspect she thought the same about me , as I stood there in a well fitted tuxedo. With no way to consummate the mutual dance attraction in front of the kids, it was a missed opportunity.

Ahhhh, the slow dance. In my mind that is what started it all and yes it was in H.S. Where I lived the school dances were not where the action took place. They were too well chaperoned. We were on notice - there was nothing remotely sexual permitted and parents and school staff enforced it. During slow dances you could be close, even lightly touching each other but no hugging or embracing. I am sure some boys got erections; but, as has been pointed out correctly, at that age a light breeze can produce an erection.

But in the summer, ironically, in order to keep us off the streets and out of trouble, The American Legion kindly made their Hall available on most Saturday nights for us to dance. We supplied the music through homemade cassette tapes with the tunes we really wanted. Adults were around but not really as chaperones - for the most part we were allowed to run the show. Turn down the lights and dance any damn way we wanted. In those days we were semi-civilized. There was no vulgar humping and such, but in the slow dances there was plenty of close frontal contact with rubbing and grinding and it was alright for the guy to put his hand on your behind. And yes I think every guy had a hard-on and occasionally I’m sure someone, to their embarrassment, would cum. But the slow dance was really just the teaser, a preview of coming attractions. Don’t get me wrong, it was great - hormones were flooding my young body, a knee pressed between my legs and I had wet panties. I can remember getting so aroused I could hardly stand it.

The Main Attraction was to come after the dance when we were all primed and ready to go. The older Juniors and all the Seniors had driver’s licenses and somehow they got the use of a car. Once the car was parked in some lonely isolated spot and we were alone, the sky was the limit. Even though it was awkward and cramped and we didn’t know what the f--- we were doing - over time we managed get our clothes out of the way and to touch all the wonderful bases. Eventually, perhaps inevitably, most of us (including myself) did “It”! And I believe the slow dance played a major role. Damn, those were truly amazing days!

Ahh, @HerBottomsUp, you brought me way back to a (semi) innocent time! Thank you for that and for sharing your recollections

Same here! We had summer dances at the American Legion….similar to @HerBottomsUp . Fond memories!
