So here is how things went:
Things went well. I found the NP to be pleasant, knowledgeable and caring. She asks me my name, DOB, today's date, where am I, why am I here and who the US president is. The exam itself was quite thorough. We discussed my lab results which were all negative other than slightly elevated cholesterol. (A first for me).
She then stated she was going to step out of the room while I undress. I stripped to my boxer briefs and upon her return she apologized for not offering a gown while reaching into a cabinet to obtain one. I do not have modesty issues. I told her I was ok without it, stating it was probably easier for her to do the job without the gown. I am in good physical condition (runner fitness) but a little underweight. She checked my BP, pulse, temp and respiration. All was fine.
She had me step on the scale 5-7 131lbs. Her remark about it "I usually have to recommend that some of my patients drop some weight. What a nice change of pace. I think it would be beneficial if you gain about a good 5 to 10 pounds, although it appears you have adequate upper body strength so I won't push the issue too much. Overall it appears you have good muscle tone and have and a well developed core. Your lab tests don't indicate any hormonal imbalances. Your weight issue is probably due to a high metabolism, nothing to worry about, however." The next thing was a little surprising. She took a tape measure out and measured my neck, chest, abdomen and hips.
Back to the table. She rubs her hand through my hair then looks in my ears. The eye tests next. Light in the eyes, follow my finger with your eyes. Then my ears, nose and mouth. She felt the glands in my neck, has me swallow and feels my thyroid.
Out comes the stethoscope. My chest and heart are both carefully stethed. Then on to my back. Breathe in/out up and down my back followed by percussion of the same areas. She then moved her fingers down my spine then applies pressure to my lower back and asks if I am in pain. No pain, just mild pressure.
"Lay back and place your hands behind your head please" and out come the leg extensions. The stethoscope now finds it's way to my throat glands and thyroid. My armpits were palpated followed by a breast exam. ( A little unusual being a man but a guy can get breast cancer ). A stethoscope exam begins of my torso. Heart, chest, and abdomen followed by some deep palpations of my 4 abdominal regions. Then a percussion of my entire torso.
I am feeling a little stressed/excited at this point as she lifts my underwear to listen to the pulses in my groin. She continues the exam by feeling my lower body from my thighs to my ankles. I have a history of running injuries so careful attention is paid to my feet. Moving them up and down, left and right.
Then I am asked to sit back up. My reflexes are tested in my arms and legs followed by upper and lower body range of motion tests.
I am asked to stand up. (I know what's coming. Ugh.) I am asked to walk back and forth across the room. Then heel to toe walking. I then had to squat down and duck walk. She then instructs me to stand up straight and slowly move my arms to my sides then reach above my head and bend over. She feels my back and slightly lowers my underwear to exam my lower back.
As I stood back up we engaged in a conversation about having a prostate exam. "I have some good news. Recent studies have indicated that the PSA test is just as accurate as a DRE, so I will be sparing you that particular unpleasantness today. I still need to check you for a hernia and a testicular exam. Please remove your shorts, place your hands at your sides with your legs shoulder width apart." She then feels my pubic hair, feels and rolls my testicles and exams my penis from head to shaft. Yes I got erect but no I was not embarrassed at all. I am reacting to stimuli, it cannot be helped. As she is conducting the exam she asks me about contraception. I respond by saying “I only gamble at the casino. I don't gamble my health, so yes I use protection.” Then the told turn your head and cough routine and the exam ended.
