Is there anything special that I should do/not do/avoid when inserting a speculum?

A quick question to those that know.

I want to insert a speculum into a nearly full term pregnant friend so we can both see what her cervix looks like at this time. Is there anything special that I should do/not do/avoid when ‘opening up’ her vagina?
