How common was it to use the douche nozzle for enemas?

I have been using a douche nozzle or something bigger for the last 65 years. I always throw those little enema nozzles away as they are useless.

On the Artsana kits I always preferred the douche nozzles, more comfortable and a better clear out.

Both my current double balloon nozzles have side holes instead of one at the tip so it's clearly the best choice.

I must be one of the few whos mom never used a douche nozzle on. I got the standard white enema tip and mom used a black enema tip for hers. She loved both enemas and douches, her douche tip was frequently drying.

As I got older it was used but not in the beginning

This is off the subject, but the home health nurse who ignited my interest in enemas for health purposes favored the use of a tube instead of a nozzle. The enemas she administered for constipation after I had consumed too much codeine were given with a hospital type disposable enema bag and a tube that she inserted several inches into me so the solution would go higher into the sigmoid. I never really felt the tube going in, only realized its length when she gently pulled it out.

In fact, when I purchased my first fountain syringe from a medical supply in 1984, the clerk was a retired nurse and recommended that I use a soft rubber rectal tube (Fr. 20 to 24), also called a catheter, instead of a short nozzle that came with the bag. Good advice that I have followed for all these years. A rectal tube of about 15 inches works very nicely for my GI needs. It has freaked out my husband at times, but he admits that he hardly feels it going in.

I like that the holes are larger, meaning a less chance of getting clogged.

The colon/rectal tubes serve a great purpose, especially when trying to get solution higher into the bowel before triggering peristalsis.

I only recall one time when the douche nozzle wasn't my mom or grandma's preferred choice.

My youngest sister got an enema and an intermediate sized nozzle was used and left attached for a couple of days as the enema bag hung to dry.

That nozzle found it's way back into mom's stash (makeup bag) of various nozzles. I did appropriate that for later use, but found it didn't really stay put or give me the same stimulation as the douche nozzles.

I remember well the day that mom switched from the reg enema nozzle to the douche. Didn't know what to expect until she started to insert it. Oh my she had to lube me up really well and reinsert the nozzle about 3 times before she could get it into my bottom.

From teen years, had no use for the standard rectal nozzles, leaked, fell out. No one ever complained of the douche nozzle except the small holes (4, 6, or 8 ) might clog. I guess the designers never intended use in the swamp mud.

This is really true for the current rectal nozzles. Even for someone like myself with tight sphincters, all it takes is a slight change in position or strong urge to expel.

I think the original poster's concern about rectal contamination of the douche nozzle didn't happen because there was less incentive to use it. This is because the vintage black rectal tips were better designed with changing contour that helped retention. Would be fun to time travel and find out 😃

The douche nozzle simply LOOKS sexier…more ominous, whatever. Besides the fact that it does stay in place better and usually results in less leakage/seepage, it FEELS better. It provides a more exciting (?) sensation as it enters your anus and rectum and under MOST circumstances, I think it provides a better flow. However, as someone mentioned earlier, a colon tube (for me, at least) is the way to go. I use a 36 inch 34 fr tube (admittedly, most of the time it only gets inserted about 15-20 inches) to deliver the goods WELL into the colon (especially when fully inserted). No discomfort, and it does seem to stimulate my butt as it is going in. Obviously, you need to be careful, and a good deal of twisting/turning/rotation is needed to avoid problems. Butt the end result is worth it!!

In Midnight Cowboy, there is a brief scene where a woman is going to give an enema to her grandson with a douche nozzle. But they may have used the douche nozzle because it looked more ominous.

Over the yeas, I've looked at many hundreds of vintage bags. Before about the 1970s, there were never use instructions printed on the box. The later bags, from about the mid-1970s on to now, almost every bag box has explicit instructions with drawings for enema and douche use, including labeling of the nozzles for enema and douche.

So, it seems plausible to me that many moms were simply ignorant. While most all families had bags, I strongly suspect that many women didn't douche. Given that, they simply chose the douche nozzle to give enemas because of the perception that the nozzle with many holes was less likely to get fully clogged with poo.

I started with the larger nozzle from the beginning (about five and a half) as I was used to inserting (and getting inserted by others) larger objects, and the standard nozzle just didn't make it. By the time I was around six, even the douche nzzle wasn't big enouh, so thus began the use of larger things that could be used instead, like a garden hose that fulfilled both needs.

I always received enemas from mom with the short, straight enema tip. When I was sneaking them on my own, I tried the douche nozzle a couple of times, but at that time didn't notice much difference. Recently, I tried it again and found that it stimulated the urge to go very nicely especially when I rotated while fully inserted.

I've posted before that in the 50's and 60's, there seemed to be much less concern about bio hazards or bacterial contamination especially within families.

Washing these items likely overcame most concerns as bloodbourne pathogens hadn't dominated the landscape until the later 70's and early 80's. Even barbers had to disinfect combs, razors, and other tools. Hospitals and clinics transitioned to disposables.

In my family, the douche nozzle was almost always used. The smaller rectal nozzle was only used on my toddler sister and it was assumed one was for adults and the other for the very young.

The fact that the larger nozzle stayed put, was likely beneficial as mom or grandma hovered over me as I laid in the tub and one held up the enema bag.

I have the opinion that the use of either the curved or straight douche nozzle for enemas is quite mixed but was quite preferred by some at different times. As a young child all of my enemas given by mother used the small short nozzle with the traditional red combo bag. Growing up the enema bag was always hanging in the shower usually wet from Mother’s morning enema ritual. As a young girl I occasionally saw Mother use a curved douche nozzle for her enema one morning when struggling with severe constipation. Later she mentioned it was helping her to get things moving. Mother always had a drawer in the bathroom with an assortment of nozzles and an open top bag I always assumed she used just for douche purposes. As a young teen I use to try and recreate a fantasy with my Mother struggling on the toilet to take an enema. Of course it was so much more real feeling the vasoline coated douche nozzle in me for real, helping me over come my constipation. Some things just never change. Lol Jeanette

Not at my house. There was the combination red hot water bottle/bag, white hose and regular nozzle. But as a naive kid I wondered about the yellow fountain syringe with the BIG nozzle. It wasn't until years later I found out. The red bag was for our rears and the yellow for the ladies' fronts. And so, it seemed they were never mixed up.

First, as kids reach double digits and start exploring their sexuality especially if there’s a douche/enema bag and nozzles around. Curiosity will eventually lead them to try both the bag and nozzles. We were fortunate our RN grandmother taught us personal hygiene as preteens. That’s not to say, we weren’t as curious as any other kids our age, because we were. And did a lot of experimenting on our own, in an out of the bathroom, like our friends did.

When my siblings an I received enemas at home, mom only used the adult rectal nozzle. At grandmas the summer I turned nine, after our first 3H enemas, she used a curved douche nozzle. It was different from the douche nozzles in the bathroom at home. The nozzles at home had four valleys with several holes in each valley and a couple had an additional hole in the tip. At grandmas, the curved douche nozzle didn’t have four valleys, it only had a long smooth curved shaft ending in a large bulbous head. The head had a ring slit around the top edge for water, causing it to spray forward in a circular ring shape. Grandma did have the same type of douche nozzles mom had, but never used them on us. She only used the adult rectal nozzle until our first 3H enema, when she switched to the curved douche nozzle with the bulbous head.

Once enemas became our responsibility as preteens and were giving each other enemas, it was our sister who first tried one of moms douche nozzles. The next time she gave me an enema, she used one of moms douche nozzles with a hole in the tip. A year or so later, I found out my girlfriend and her sister were giving each other enemas, like my siblings an I. And like us, they were using one of their moms douche nozzles. After my girlfriend an I started swapping enemas, we used a douche nozzle. Years later, after I was married, my wife an I used a curved douche nozzle with a hole in the tip that originally came from home. A year or so into our marriage, we got involved with three other married couples our age for the primary purpose of sharing and swapping enemas. They too, were primarily using either a curved or straight douche nozzle for their enemas.

Based on what I've seen here at Zity, I agree. I was familiar with the standard curved black nozzle with holes along the sided. The one you mentioned “The head had a ring slit around the top edge for water, causing it to spray forward in a circular ring shape.” I only discovered a couple of decades ago.

The nozzle your talking about belonged to my RN grandmother. It was given to my wife years ago an I still have it. As to where my grandmother got it, I have absolutely no idea.

Ah yes my ex-wife had one of these that sprayed a cone of water around the edges of the tip and wow was it stimulating for enemas. I used to hang the bag high up and spray my prostate during the enema. Caused a very strong orgasm!

Or if you already have an enema bulb or bag with a long nozzle, you could always bore a few more holes in the tip of the nozzle with a narrow sized drill.

The answer I'm about to give is split into two replies, the reasons being obvious to most

1.) Those here who had grown up with medically trained parents such as PA's, NA's (nursing aides), RN's, Registrars and Doctors only ever used the rectal cannula for the administration of the Enema(s), with the Douche nozzle applicable to vaginal procedures as intended.

Therefore from a medical stance not commonplace at all.

As for myself I'd “discovered” the kind of pleasure the Douche nozzle was capable of delivering . . . many times 😁
