I'm curious about everyone's experiences with disrobing practices for Osteopathic Manipulative Medicine docs. To be clear, I'm not talking about DOs who are in primary care or other medical specialties. I'm speaking of DOs who specialize in manipulation of the spine, joints and viscera. I know that osteopathic practice is different between the US and Europe.
When I saw our DO for my first manipulative medicine session, she had me undress to my panties and wear a gown, open in the back. At one point in her career, she had been in primary care/family medicine, so it's her practice to perform a general physical on new patients, in addition to the more focused osteopathic exam. She examined my HEENT, then auscultated my heart and lungs with the gown lowered. She examined my abdomen with the hem of the gown lifted up. Then she did the osteopathic exam, having me walk back and forth from her, checking my spine and all of my joints. Then she did some adjustments of my neck, chest, lower back and hips with me wearing the gown and my panties.
I haven't undressed at all at any subsequent visits. She asks that I wear loose-fitting or “flexible” clothing, so I typically wear a tshirt or sweatshirt with yoga pants or sweatpants or shorts in the summer, with a sports bra and granny panties underneath.
@Deviant1 has had the same experiences with her, minus the yoga pants, sports bra and granny panties. 😉 Our appointments are generally back to back so we can be there with each other.
So, for those of you who have seen DOs for manipulative treatment, what have your experiences been like? Did you get a physical exam at the first visit? How are you instructed to be dressed for appointments? And I'm curious also about how it works in Europe as opposed to the US with DOs.
