I've performed sexual assault evidence examinations from females and males. They are horridly invasive and I felt like I was assaulting the person.
Examples: each piece of clothing is evidence, so I have to stay in the room as the person takes off each piece of clothing and hands it to me so I can bag it. Anything that is wet, like underwear, goes on a drying stand to dry before going in the bag. The patient has to fully undress before getting a gown. So at the end, you have a person who has just been assaulted, now forced to stand naked in front of me and a nurse.
Part of the exam is to scrape under the nails. In normal circumstances, this is no worse than what might happen during a manicure, but it feels very invasive to someone who has just been assaulted.
I have to comb their hair to try to get out any foreign substances. After this, I have to pluck five hairs from each of five different parts of the patients head. Same thing with pubic hair: comb it and then pluck.
Then, of course, there is all the swabs.
From a professional perspective, I enjoy the precise and scripted nature of the evidence collection. In another life, I would have enjoyed being a crime scene technician. But from what I have to do to the poor patients, it is terrible.
