I recently came across this question and it got me thinking have I been in that situation? And the honourest awnser is yes,
I have but that is if but no pun intended that's only if you count/take into consideration the time when I was 2 or 3 years old when my peareants took me on a long distance road trip in a hired car
from Los Angeles California to Las Vaygas Navada, whilst on holiday in the USA.
We where originally due to fly that day as we had come from Miami Florida on a connecting flight from Boston as we were on a two month holiday/vacation in americs from The Cayman Islands.
However for reasons beyond our control on that particular day we couldn't do so on the day in question and so we ended up renting a car at the airport from Hurtz/Avis I am not exactly sure which one as there was quite a long selection of rental agencies
As the other option was to stay the night at an expensive hotel and not one that was paid by the airline.
Plus the fact that compensation back then didn't really excist exept for acts of God no pun intended, nowerdays if your flight is missed due to factors beyond your control the airlines are obliged by law to put you up for the night at the expense of the airline or book you alternative transportation to your onwerds destination
However in 1982/1983 non of this excisted as official policy
Andso subsequently my peareants refused to do that as we would have missed our hotel reservations in Las Vaygas and our onwerd flights from that airport
However if we had been able to fly that day it would have been with any of the regular airlines such as Pan Am, United or American, Frontier, PSA, Southern, America west, Western Airlines, Delta l, or others that flew that route on a regular basis.
Speaking of my memories of the car we rented it was an almost brand new looking 1970's vintage Oldsmobile 442 in black with a creme interior fortunately it also came with air conditioning as standard which was a godsend as we were travelling into the dessert and along long country roads
It just happened to be along the now famous route 66, although I can only remember the car because of the description given by my peareants as we have unfortunately no photos of the journey,
However coincidentally the song “Get your kicks on route 66”, by the rolling stones who happen to be one of my favourite bands of all time was playing on the radio as if someone had magically choose not for us on that day.
And because we partially didn't know the route at that time plus the fact we weren't stopping we didn't have much time to take in the scenary anywhere on route as we had hotel reservations to make that day
So mom put me into my pampers or Huggies diapers from our suitcase and my most comfortable baby cloths and put me into a portable child seat along with a drink in my baby bottle of cow & gate baby formula and away we went.
And I was told that if I needed to go at any point I had to use my diaper/nappy which wasn't a problem with me as I was still a toddler at that time so that came naturally anyway.
I really enjoyed that day and the week or two that we spent in las Vargas although naturally since I was only a toddler at that time I couldn't gamble However I do vividly remember seeing the hotel casino,
not because my peareants ever gambled there or at least not in my life time, but because las Vaygas is basically casino land as I refer to it,
As it's kind of like Disney world but instead of the famous rides you have casinos and gambling halls and elvis presley impressionists or the daily magic shows.
The main reason I can remember all of this is because of the fact my parents later told me about it plenty of times.
And I really enjoyed my trip to Las Vegas Nevada and if the chance ever arose to do it again I wouldn't hesitate as specially if I in the future I ever got a driving license and was in the USA on holiday.
And then I would revisit that trip as it was a great journey, although be it a very long one and yes I would be naturally packing some diapers for the trip too as it's a long trip to travel on.
Would I do it again? Well the simple awnser is yes although this time around the only difference from back then Vs nowadays
it would be they would have to adult size one, as I have long since out grown the largest baby/kids size one and I am now currently in my 40's and I am no longer a toddler at least physically speaking.
And if I had to stop anywhere on route and stay the night at a hotel or motel I would make sure that I had plenty of diapers with me and would inform the receptionist that so am incontinent in advance so there would be no embarrassing situations.
I would even make the point of selecting the vehicle for the trip and re-creating some of the magic of that day all those years ago as it's on my bucket list
of places to visit at some point in my life as specially as it's on route 66 which is one of my all time favourite trips and yes I would choose that sound track to play on full volume as I roll down the car window and enjoy the journey.
If I ever got a us driving license and rented a car although it would have to be in Automatic as I am no good at changing gears in a car.
