Yeah actually! Almost two years ago, me and my brothers were getting physicals. The nurses used a blood pressure machine on each of us, then when the doctor came in, I suggested I go into a different room and see another available doctor. (I'm not fond of anyone watching my exam, so I went to a different room for some privacy) To my luck, this doctor was a tall blonde woman who looked to be in her mid-forties. She asked me a couple of questions she had and then moved into examining me. At one point she used her stethoscope to listen to my breathing. Then after she was done with it, I asked what my heart rate was. She told me she didn't need to listen to it at all because that blood pressure machine before counted my heart rate. And then some dialogue got interesting.
“Would you like to listen to it now? Heart rates can always change from time to time.” I said. She chuckled a couple of times and pulled the stethoscope from around her neck.
“I could, but unfortunately I don't have a timer for it.” She says. I got up from the table and reached into my sweatshirt pocket.
“That's okay, my phone has a stopwatch,” I say. She puts the earpieces on with an eager look on her face.
“Ooh, you came prepared for this!” She says, laughing a bit. I lied down for her and she slid the diaphragm just under my T-shirt collar. I opened up the stopwatch for her and she asks: “Should I listen for fifteen seconds or thirty?” And was this really a tough question?
“Thirty please,” I say, smiling internally at the thought of her already able to hear my excited heart for a few additional thumps before the timer started. She told me to start when I'm ready, so after a few seconds of preparing, I say “count” and tap the button immediately. She looks up for several seconds, her eyes staring at the ceiling, but her head only slightly hunched over me. The thirty seconds go by and I tell her to stop. She told me she counted 42 beats, giving me a resting heart rate of 84. I then managed to mention I was a cardiophile, and this part was my favorite. She laughed cutely at this, seeming eager to hear that from me.
This is by far my favorite medical experience so far, and I'll never forget what it was like! 😄
