Recently I came across the very same Pyrex measuring cup that mom used when preparing our enemas as children. it had a very strong nostalgic effect on me. I can still picture her at the sink running the water and adding baking soda or soap suds and filling the open top bag.
I then decided to drive by more of the happy memories from the past. first I drove by old Dr. Green's house where he had a clinic where my wife was taken as a young girl. She received a rectal exam from him EVERY time she went there no matter why. next I drove past her childhood farm house were we played doctor up in the hay loft of the barn together when very little.
Then I drove past our old house and looked up at the window where all 4 of us kids were placed on the table for enemas. From there I took the route my mother walked one night on her way to her friend Grace's house with our enema bag in a paper bag to give enemas to all of Grace's kids. Grace had worn her's out probably from over use!
Her street had 4 enema moms that I knew of on that one block. A few houses up the street from Grace lived a lady with 2 adorable little girls who got enemas regularly. Across the street lived my mom's friend Dot with 4 of her own. Another lady at the end of the block had 3 little boys. All of these women were always talking about enemas for the kids and often helped each other give them. One day Grace proudly announced to my mother, "we gave 10 enemas last night!"
Mom was pissed she had missed out. "why didn't you call ME!"
Those mothers always put the kids on top of the table for enemas just like my mom did and they were always talking about enemas in front of me.
The old drugstore is still in business now for the 4th generation. This is the pharmacy where my grandmother bought her equipment and my mom got hers there too.
Finally I drove by an old girl friend's house where she grew up in a 2 family house. She was the oldest of 6 girls and would very frequently give enemas to her sisters sometimes telling her mom one or more sisters "needed" an enema. Her mom always gave it. She also ALWAYS gave at least one enema to her sisters whenever she babysat them. It was usually just one or two but one night 3 of her sisters got them. The youngest was her favorite.
"She was the most docile and did whatever I told her to do."
Her aunt shared the other side of this huge 2 family home and she had 5 children. The oldest was a boy and the rest were girls. if my girlfriend happened to be over at her aunt's house on a Friday after dinner she got an enema too! Her aunt was a very strict lady and spanked her kids often. She gave enemas to all of them every Friday night even when they were home from college.
The house is long gone but the enema memories remain.
