I’ve done enemas for 60 plus years and the equipment hangs in my bathroom shower. It’s a circa 1950’s two quart red closed top douche/enema bag, the only difference is the hose, it’s clear silicone with roll type cutoff and a small round flow gage. Attached is a small black three inch long butt plug shaped nozzle, as opposed to the original straight rectal or curved douche nozzle.
For a number of years I kept my niece’s kids, picking them up from daycare or after school. They had the run of the house and used which ever of the three bathrooms they wished, or happen to be close to when the need arose. They have seen my enema bag hanging in my bathroom shower many times, without so much as a word. Then one day, out of the blue, the oldest asked, “what is that, and what’s it used for?” A few days later, the youngest ask the same question. The answer I gave them was, “it’s used to wash out your bottom when you get stopped up.” They both told me, “mom gives us Miralax when we get stopped up.” Then asked, “can we try that next time we get stopped up?” I replied, “that’s a question you’ll have to ask your mom.” If I had answered their last question in any other way, would have been inappropriate, because, that’s their parents turf not mine.
I informed their mom about the questions they asked, and she replied, “you and my dad and your enemas.” I told her, “hay, works much quicker than any laxative, and don’t forget, what happened to your dad and his laxative use when you were growing up.” She replied, “I remember, and do understand why you both use enemas. Dad’s been after me to switch back to enemas, as well as, the kids for that very reason. I’ve talked with their Pediatrician about it, and the reason behind it, but she’s against enema use for kids and not concerned about their laxative use.” I reminded her, “you and your sister, along with my two, got your share of enemas from either my wife and I, or your parents growing up, and you four never showed any signs of disliking enemas growing up.” She said, “it’s not that, I didn’t minded getting enemas and still don’t. I rather like the way they made me feel. It’s just that, during college it was a matter of not having the privacy, so I switched to laxatives and never went back when I graduated.” I told her, “you need to listen to your dad, he’s right, you need to switch back and let your kids try it, being they’ve asked me about given it a try.”
My wife and I, before our divorce, didn’t hide anything from our two kids, nor did my brother and his wife hide anything from their two girls. We gave them age appropriate accurate information to the best of our knowledge. Today, kids are even more knowledgeable than my kids were thirty five years ago, even then, my two could see right through a falsehood. The information superhighway has given today’s kids more information availability, than we had available in our twenties as adults, and can see right through something other than the truth.
