My mother sadly became seriously ill (cancer) and died when I was 9. Before that she certainly accompanied me to specialist Paediatric examinations that I had with a Senior Consultant at Nottingham Children's Hospital (UK). This was a big deal for me as we lived about 12 miles away and had to travel there by bus. It was a big adventure for me, travelling to the city when I was aged 7 or 8.
I saw this wonderful doctor because I had serious medical problems as a young boy (not being able to stand or walk until I was nearly 5). I think that I came to his attention because local doctors where I lived had pronounced that I would never walk. I had specialist physiotherapy / intense examination sessions with him. He then mapped out a series of physiotherapy sessions for me (based on my progress) at a local clinic in the town where I lived. 20 - 25 sessions per year for nearly 5 years. He would occasionally turn up at some of these sessions (briefly to chat with me...but mostly to talk to the physiotherapists.
I was always naked during these sessions. As I was quite young and pre-pubescent, I sort of got used to it - not really becoming too self - conscious until I was nearly 12 when puberty was about to kick - in. No-one thought anything of it back in the early 1960s & nothing improper ever happened. I am sure that I needed to be naked because these areas of my body needed very, very close observation during exercises / manipulations: All of the bones / muscles / sinews / ligaments etc in: bottom of spinal column, entire pelvic girdle, hip joints, the top of the thighs at the groin area. Even wearing shorts or briefs would have obscured some of those presumably very important areas to be checked.
My mother certainly came in to the first 3 or 4 sessions. Yes.......quite often I would still be lying on a mat (nude)..sometimes asked to continue with a few movements...or just be sitting naked on an examination bench while the doctor talked to my mother (as though I was not present....pretty common I guess). The last couple of times we went (before she got ill), she chose to wait outside in a little private waiting area. There were usually always 3 or 4 mothers (I never saw anyone with their father) there with a son or daughter. The doctor only saw patients aged 5 - 12. To save time (I imagine), mothers were asked to either undress their children (or get them to undress themselves) down to vest / pants (boys) & vest/knickers (girls). When the boys had been examined etc, he simply asked them to take their underwear and go out (back to their mothers) to get dressed. So we (any boys) were always very briefly naked in the little private waiting area. Girls, however, were afforded a little more modesty. They always emerged in their vests / knickers. I do remember moaning to my mother that people could see me bare. You will not be surprised that she was totally unsympathetic. She would get very annoyed and almost hiss at me not to be so daft / silly and then tell me to just get dressed "and be sharp* about it!!" (* quick). She would then lecture me along the lines of no-one was looking at me / no-one was bothered / no-one cared / no-one was interested etc., etc. Of course, she was probably right...but I was always slightly embarrassed....being even briefly naked - in front of complete strangers.
Parents also had the option to attend school medical examinations. Because of my ongoing (but improving) medical condition....I had a school medical annually (which was not the norm for most boys). However, for whatever reason, my mother chose not to attend the school physicals whilst she was still alive. Starting off in vest / pants for routine checks...it progressed to vest off for ausculcation / abdominal checks and, finally...yes...pants off for thorough genital / hernia / anal checks. I had so many exams whereby I ended up naked that I sort of got used to it....but I began to dread it from about age 12 / 13 onwards.
