“Open wide” has anyone ever been asked?

How does does people’s dental exam usually start? Do you willingly open your mouth when the dentist is ready to begin or do you have to be asked/prompted to open up?

I just open my mouth. I guess I've done this enough times to know when my hygienist and/or dentist is ready for me. LOL

As soon as I see them grab their tools of choice and move in I just reactively open for them. I don't think I've heard "open wide" in years.

I have to be asked. Just like at the gynecologist. "Open wide."

I just open up when I see them grabbing the tools. Not that I wouldn't like to be asked to open wide...

When I was a baby I used to be asked, particularly by a nice young blond dentist, now I know when the dentist of Hygienist will need the mouth open and anticipate the request

Strangely enough mine usually starts with a blood pressure. I guess they want to make sure I don't keel over before they are done

I think i open my mouth when the dentist says " ok, lets see" and when grabing his tools. as @LenaM said eariler

Sometimes I'm been asked "please open". But "open wide" is pretty uncommon for the start of the exam.

However, it is not unusual to be asked to open wider during the drilling or other procedures, when the jaws are getting tired.

As a retired dentist, all the previous comments are correct. However, opening the jaw too widely and also for too long a time can cause lots of pain in jaw opening and jaw closing muscles.

My dentist always asks me to open wide; I normally only open slightly requiring prompting/assistance to open to the desired position.

Usually when I see them grab there instruments I just open, sometimes he will say nice and wide as he goes in with the instrument.

Like others have said I usually open my mouth but have also been told to open my mouth wider.

“Open wide, please. A little wider. As wide as you can.“

I open immediately, although I’m usually instructed to open wider. Maybe next appointment in a few weeks I’ll have her instruct me to open from the beginning

I'm always anxious and I don't want to do that so they always have to ask me. Maybe twice.

Cuz of money at different times and in different insurance is at different times I've had a lot of different dentists over the years and usually it's open wide and then the second time it oh come on

I don’t want anyone to tell me to open wide. I just want them to hold my nose until I gasp for air. Then feel them work a plastic cheek retractor or a metal dental gag (or both) into my mouth. Once they aim the light at my mouth and I feel the warmth at the back of my throat, I want them to tell me how filthy my mouth is, what kind of work I will need, how painful it will be, and that if I behave, they might use local anesthetic…. Lol

I would probably enjoy the appointment more if the mean Dentist is a woman. I don’t see many women here in dominant roles that play with other women, but if I ever met a dominant woman that wanted to play with me, I would enjoy it so much. Hahaha.

Yes, usually she asks me to open wider and not to slide down the chair, which is hard when one is trying to stay conscious, lol.

I waited at my most recent appointment to open until I was instructed to do so. It absolutely made it more enjoyable

I’ve never had a problem opening for the hygienist and dentist, when they tell me to open, I open. I was hesitant to open for the orthodontist and oral surgeon the first time I saw them; they just kind of tapped on my mouth with the instrument and applied slight pressure though, and I opened up.
