Slower expels when dehydrated?

I've noticed that when I'm thirsty (not always dehydrated, but that made a better title) the enemas often don't expel as nicely as they do otherwise. I guess it makes sense that the body would try to hold onto water, but on the other hand I'm not sure exactly why a mechanism to hold onto water in the large intestine would develop because it wouldn't tend to be injected there.

I guess the question is does anyone else notice this?

Interesting topic. Even if dehydrated - how fast could you absorb two quarts of water through your colon - versus the pressure to expel (gravity, peristalsis, etc.) Would like to hear more on this fro some of Zity's medical staff!!

That's ridiculous.

It would take a few hours to absorb 2-3 quarts of water from the colon even if you were dehydrated. So if you held it for 15 minutes you would still expel almost all of it.

If you are dehydrated and want to absorb water--DRINK IT.

I have always been able to expel my enemas easily but it's hard for me to tell how much comes out relative to how much I put in- I have never done any formal capture of my expels to measure volume. The only thing I have noticed in conjunction with absorption is that I may need to urinate soon after an enema, which I would imagine means my body was adequately hydrated before I started doing enemas. But I would tend to agree with Susie- absorption does happen but in small amounts.

You should be aware of the physiological fact that it is the JOB of the large intestine to extract water out of what it contains, be it received from the small intestine or injected by an enema. The intensity of the extraction will be governed by the actual water economy of the body.

Just to be clear, I am not clinically dehydrated, just not enough water.

Yes, it makes sense for the body to do that, but how on Earth would there be enough instances of that scenario to favor genes demonstrating that trait? Unless it's just slowed down in general so that more water is removed from the stool and a side effect is that enemas don't work as well.

Yes, drinking water is MUCH better. I also notice after the enemas when I'm thirsty something seems to trigger the kidneys to operate more, so I generally wind up drinking anyway. When I drink the water it will usually "stay in" better.

There is a process known as diffusion which states that molecules tend o move from places of higher concentration to places of lower concentration. That is true for all molecules even when they must pass through a membrane. Most membranes are semi-permeable, which means that different molecules cross them at different rates. Generally small molecules go through more rapidly then larger ones.

When there is a semipermeable membrane the large molecules (like proteins) will cross the membrane and move out of the cell slower( or not at all) while small molecules ( like water) will cross the membrane easily. This results in the production of a pressure on one side of the membrane. Eventually the pressure becomes large enough to prevent additional small molecules from crossing the membrane.

So if your cells and your blood have a lower concentration of water than normal( you are dehydrated) water will pass through the cell membranes from your intestine where the concentration of water is very much higher than in the cells and into the cells and ultimately into your blood .

There is more to it than that, but that is a simple scientific explanation

With the membrane it is basic osmosis. My curiosity was if there was a physiological mechanism that would slow down peristalsis to keep the water there if you were thirsty, because it seems as though my colon is not as cooperative if I'm thirsty.
