Im sure we have all read the warnings about frequent enemas, but being only a few months away from 74, and there were times when I was doing 3 to 6 enemas a week, I can report no damage or side effects. So in my life I have taken, conservatively 7,800 enemas, although there was a much higher frequency between 20 and 50, so that number is probably more like 12,000. Add in childhood enemas, and those as an older adult, probably gets to 12,500.
My latest colonoscopy, all good, see you in 10 years.
Simple rules, stick with tap water and a comfortable volume, which for me is right at 2,500cc or 2.6 quarts. Nothing wrong with castile soap once in a while, or a bit of salt or bicarbonate of soda, but that has only been occasional, but there was a lot of Ivory in mom's enemas. I've tried flat beer and wine with no ill effects, the wine diluted 2 to 1.
I love deeply inserted colon tubes, but go very gently and know yourself.
The only long term ill effect I know of was a friend who was into quantity and was told be had a very enlarged colon, one of two friends, one male and one female, that were into volume, so the folks in the gallon club (or more) likely have some enlargement. The male friend, back in the days of barium enemas, before colonoscopies, said at his exam they had to add solution to the bag (or use a second bag), because the first didn't fill his colon. I know when I had my first barium enema the technician saw me eyeing the bag, made the comment not to worry, it would probably only be an inch of solution. I was tempted to say, in fact wish I had, that I could take the whole thing. And once filed and I got to look at the bag, it was nearly empty, and I'm sure that was the case with many people. My wife at the time said she had a barium enema when she was about 18, her first enema (that she could remember) said she was surprised she had taken most of the bag.
So, back to the point, from my observations, take as many enemas as you enjoy, read your body, and when it says stop, stop! Never once effecteted my ability to poop on my own,
