I had a trans vaginal ultrasound (because of post menopausal bleeding) on Thursday. Here is how it went:
When I was called in for the u/s, the tech, a very nice lady about my age, had me lie down on the table and pull my pants and panties down just a bit. She did the pelvic u/s, but could not get a good picture because my bladder was not full. (my obgyn said I didn't have to drink water as he doesn't care about that part, it's the trans vaginal images he wants) This part only took a few minutes. She then took me to the washroom and told me to empty my bladder completely. To make sure nothing was left.
When I went back to the room, she had turned the table into a chair. She told me to pull my pants and undies down or off, whichever I preferred. I didn't think I'd be able to pull my legs far enough apart if I left them on around my ankles, so she pulled them off for me. (at home, I use what I call a "grabber" or "reacher" to get them off as I have arthritis and mobility issues) She helped me swing my legs around so I was sitting in the chair. She told me I could insert the wand into my vagina, then she would take over. I was fine with her doing it, though, so she looked but felt it wouldn't work in the position I was in. She asked me if I minded trying the stirrups and I said not at all. So she had me hold the wand (she had already put the lubricant on it, so couldn't set it down) while she put the stirrups on, then she put my feet in them. They were higher and further apart than any I'd been in before, but I was very comfortable. I think she was surprised that I was so willing to use them, but I couldn't very well tell her I have a medical fetish lol. She then started the u/s. This one was a lot longer than the external one - about 15 or 20 minutes - and she had to get me to adjust my position a few times to get a good picture. There was only one time when it hurt, when she turned the wand a certain way. Part of it was a bit uncomfortable due to pressing on the bladder, but it wasn't anything major. At one point, something ran down me and I asked her if I just peed. She said no, it was probably the lubricant, that when it gets warm, it turns to liquid. I told her that was a relief, that I'd be very embarrassed if I had peed. She said some women have an accident while getting the u/s but to her it was no big deal.
Near the end, she couldn't get a good picture so she asked me if I minded if she got another tech to help. I said not at all. I told her I was raised by a nurse who taught us to not be ashamed of our bodies - don't flaunt them but don't be ashamed either. So, most of the time, I don't have a problem with medical professionals seeing me. Heck, I told her I've even dressed in front of my landlady - she didn't mind so neither did I! She got another tech who was able to get the picture she needed and then it was over.
As she was removing the stirrups, she asked if I was okay in them and I told her that they were actually very comfortable for my back, which had been hurting before she got them out. I think it's because of the legs being up, it straightens the spine. I could have laid there all day! She helped me get my pants back on and I went home. She said my doctor should have the results the next day.
I haven't heard from my obgyn's office about the results yet, but I have an appointment with my GP on Monday and she is supposed to get a copy, so I may ask her if she has it yet, as she wanted me to have a tv u/s for a bladder feeling full when not full problem I was complaining about.
